GOLF: Kelley set to play in MDGT Championship

RICHMOND — The Musselman-Dunne Golf Tour (MDGT) Championship has brought together the top junior golfers in Kentucky for almost two decades.

This season was no exception as invitations were sent out to MDGT members in 11 age divisions and special exemptions to the state’s top junior golfers.  The Tour Championship brings together the very best that will take their games to prestigious Big Spring Country Club in Louisville.

For the second-straight year, Richmond’s Dylan Kelley has been invited to compete in the boys championship division of the prestigious event.

The two-day tournament is set to get under way today.

Chris Miller of Prospect and Wade Cave of Campbellsville are the top two point leaders vying for Player of the Year honors in the boys championship division. Other top contenders are Lucas Jones of Louisville, who just won the Junior Fall Cities Championship last week. Runner-up Josh Frederick of Louisville is also in the field. Cooper Musselman and Brendon Doyle, both from Louisville, should also content for the championship. Kelley of Richmond, Dustin Hicks of Cecilia and Ross Todd of Winchester should also make strong showings.

Big Spring, site of the 1952 PGA Championship and many of the state’s top amateur and professional events, will play host to the Tour Championship for the 16th time in the 19 year history of the MDGT. One of the state’s top facilities, Big Spring was refurbished in 2003 by one of the great course designers — Reese Jones — and has since hosted the KY State Amateur and the KY State Senior Champonships as well as many USGA qualifying events.

A field of 100 players will tee it up today and Tuesday.
