LITTLE LEAGUE: All-Stars keep rolling

RICHMOND — The Richmond Little League All-Star teams continue to dominate the competition at the District 3 Tournament at Anderson-Dean Park in Harrodsburg.

All five local teams that were in action Tuesday picked up victories.

Through the first four days of the tournament, Richmond Little League teams are 13-2.

In the 9-10 year-old tournament, Richmond National defeated Anderson County, 11-10. In the 11 year-old tournament, Richmond National topped Mercer County, 12-5 and Richmond American defeated Harrison County, 5-1. In the 11-12 year-old tournament, Richmond National defeated Powell County, 15-1, and Richmond American beat Harrison County, 9-8.

9-10 year-olds

Richmond National built an early lead, but had to rally to pick up an 11-10 win over Anderson County Tuesday in Harrodsburg.

Richmond National (2-0) trailed 8-6 in the fourth, but scored five times in the fifth to re-take the lead for good. Grant Hotchkiss had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Luke Foley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Colton Perkins had a hit, scored a run and had two RBIs, Nathan Story had a hit and scored twice, Zach Purvis had a hit, RBI and scored a run, Bryson Howell scored twice, Evan Baezley scored a run, while Ethan Neal and Dawson Miller each had a hit.

Neal started on the mound for Richmond National. Miller, Foley, Purvis and Hotchkiss also pitched.

11-year-olds

Richmond National (3-0) used a late surge to pull away from Mercer County Tuesday in Harrodsburg.

After Mercer County rallied to tie the game at 4-4, Richmond National went on to pick up a 12-5 win, highlighted by a three-run sixth inning.

Matthew McQuain was 2-for-3 with a double, Tyler Storie was 2-for-2 with a double, Caleb Patterson was 3-for-3, Ethan Haun and Ben Snapp were both 2-for-4 with a double and Jacob Beck had a double.

Dalton Gregory started for Richmond National. Beck and Clay Combs also pitched in the victory.

Richmond American (2-1) got a complete-game performance from Luke Keck during a 5-1 win over Harrison County Tuesday in Harrodsburg.

Keck had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Lucas Myers had two hits and scored twice, Kenton Humphrey had a double and scored a run, Jason Deerfield had a single and scored a run, Keck scored a run, while Lincoln Lunsford and Hayden Waterbeck each had a hit.

Richmond National and Richmond American are set to meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Harrodsburg.

11-12 year-olds

Richmond National had no problem rolling past Powell County Tuesday in Harrodsburg.

Austin Adams and Dalton Moore combined to strike out nine hitters during a 15-1 four-inning victory.

Richmond National (2-0) got two hits each from Adams, Taelor Witt, Moore and Chris Koretski, while Jacob Ferris, Casey Brandenburg, Keegan Naugle and Cordell Hill each had a hit.

Richmond National is set to return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday against Mercer County.

Richmond American saw a huge lead slip away, but still held on for a 9-8 win over Harrison County Tuesday in Harrodsburg.

Richmond American (3-0) scored eight times in the first inning with two outs before Harrison County started to get back in the game.

Evan Courtwright drove in the winning run and also earned the save. Dillon Wheatley had a home run and Derek Daniel had three hits. Corbin Roberts had two hits and pitched three solid innings.

Kyle Brubaker and James Goble each had two hits and Richmond American turned two double plays.

Richmond American will return to action Friday in the semifinals.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
