RICHMOND —
Led by Kyle Congleton, the Madison Central boys golf team took the title Saturday at the GRC Invitational in Winchester.
The Indians shot a 297, beating out Oldham County by one stroke. Greenup County was third at 300 and Greenwood and Ashland tied for fourth with total scores of 303.
Congleton took the individual title, shooting a 66. He beat out Logan Hogge of Bath County by three strokes. Jared Stacey (Rowan County) and Trey Render (Oldham County) finished tied for third.
The 19-team tournament was conducted on Cassell Creek in Winchester.
Southern wins two
Tony Santiago scored five goals on Saturday as the Madison Southern boys soccer team picked up two lopsided wins in Berea.
The senior had a hat trick against Taylor County and a couple hours later added two more goals to his total against Whitley County.
The Eagles (3-3-1) defeated Taylor (1-6-1) 7-0 and then beat Whitley County, 7-0, as well.
Santiago also had an assist in the first game. His brother Mitchell scored a goal and had an assist. Adam Miller knocked in a penalty kick, while Tyler Hellerd and Ryan Baker each added goals for the Eagles.
In the second game, Anthony Santiago had another pair and Mitchell Santiago scored as the Eagles raced past Whitley (2-3-1).
A. J. Jeck pushed one past the Whitley keeper, while sophomore Salvador Quintana registered the second hat trick for the Eagles in one day.
Kyle Dickhaus manned the net for both shutouts, getting spells from Zach Ward in the first game and Matt Coldwell in the second game.
The Eagles will play host to Pulaski County (5-2) Tuesday.
