RICHMOND —
The Lady Colonels’ golf team opened their spring schedule with an eighth-place finish Feb. 26 in the annual USA Women’s Invitational hosted by South Alabama.
The event was contested at the par 72, 6,071 yard, Azalea Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.
With its two-round total of 641, EKU finished five shots behind Jacksonville State, 636, and 14 shots in front of Alabama-Birmingham, 655. Louisiana-Monroe, 616, captured the title by one shot over South Alabama, 617.
Freshman Anna Gleixner and Becky Sharpe led the Colonels with 36-hole totals of 159. The duo tied for 21st overall. Senior April Emerson, with a score of 160, tied for 27th overall, Rachel Welker shot 165 and tied for 44th and Kristen Dorsey had a 166 and tied for 46th overall.
Playing as an individual, Nicki Henry shot a 172.
The Colonels will be in action today at the Time Warner Classic hosted by Murray State.
Let’s hope ole man winter shakes the snow out of his hair and gets the heck out of here. A little global warming, please, and let these sweet swinging ladies get a little practice.
OVC preseason golf poll
In the league’s annual preseason poll, the EKU men’s golf team was picked to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference this spring.
Jacksonville State was picked to win the conference. Austin Peay was picked second and Murray State was picked third.
Eleven OVC schools participate in men’s golf.
The EKU men’s team opened the spring portion of its schedule Monday at the Samford Invitational.
In the women’s 10-member field, the EKU ladies were picked to finish sixth. Morehead State was chosen as the favorite to win the conference. Jacksonville State, was slated for second, Murray State was third, Belmont was fourth and Austin Peay was fifth.
Good luck to both the golf teams and let’s hope you can make these preseason prognosticators look like novices.

I’m glad to be writing again
It is good to see the golf season roll around again and I have something to write about.
I have goofed off for three months and I have missed writing. Carolyn and I did sneak off to Florida for a couple of weeks visiting with relatives and walking the beach.
That was wonderful but now I’m ready to roll again, if the weather will let us!

Golf humor
The great Arnold Palmer once had a nasty 13 on a par-five hole and a golf reporter asked him how it happened.
Unruffled, Arnie answered, “I missed the putt for 12.”
A gushy reporter told Phil Mickelson, “You are spectacular, your name is synonymous with the game of golf. You really know your way around the course. What’s your secret?”
Mickelson replied, “The holes are numbered.”
