EKU FOOTBALL: Ceniza happy to be back on the field

RICHMOND — After watching the first two games of the season from the sidelines, C.J. Ceniza couldn’t wait to get back on the field.

And in the past two weeks, the senior defensive back has played a big role in impressive wins for the Colonels (3-1, 1-0 OVC).

Ceniza had six tackles against Coastal Carolina (third-best on the team), then on Saturday he had two interceptions — one of which he returned for a TD — and also recovered a fumble in a 51-21 win over 24th-ranked Jacksonville State in EKU’s conference opener.

On Sunday, the senior was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

“It was my first home game and I was just really excited and wanted to make some plays,” Ceniza said.

Ceniza missed the first two games of the season after suffering a groin injury just before the season opener at Purdue.

The Las Vegas native recorded his first-career interception when he picked off  quarterback Marques Ivory at the JSU 36-yard line with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

With EKU leading 20-8 in the second quarter, Ceniza recovered a Washaun Ealey fumble at the JSU 47-yard line.

Seven plays later, Cameron Bailey caught aN 18-yard pass from T.J. Pryor that gave the Colonels a 19-point lead.

Ceniza pretty much sealed the victory on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The senior picked off Ivory again and went 84 yards for a touchdown that put EKU on top 51-15.

“I just made a play and tried to take it back,” Ceniza said after the game.

That play marked the fourth-longest interception return in the FCS this season. Ceniza also added four solo tackles in the victory.

The senior played two seasons at Mt. San Jacinto College before transferring to EKU. Ceniza started two games at defensive back last year and saw action in six games, recording nine tackles, including one tackle-for-loss.

The Colonels are set to return to action Saturday at UT-Martin.
