H.S. HOOPS: Central Stuns St. X in OT

MADISON COUNTY — The Indians needed a little magic just to get to overtime.

And Ken-Jah Bosley provided that.

But, once they got into the extra session, they were in control.

“I thought we were ready to go,” Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. “I felt good. I thought we had all the momentum.

The Indians trailed by four points with 11 seconds left, but fought back for a 79-76 win over St. Xavier Wednesday in the opening round of the King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale High School.

Bosley hit a 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game, then scored seven more points in overtime to help Central pull out a remarkable victory.

The Indians advance to the quarterfinals and will take on Fairdale Friday in Louisville.

“In the first half, we played absolutely horrible,” Feldhaus said. “We had no energy. But, somehow we just kept hanging in there.”

Senior point guard Dominique Hawkins had a team-best 24 points, but fouled out with about three minutes left. Central starters Quan Taylor (seven points, 10 rebounds) also fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Central trailed by 14 points in the third quarter but was able to get back to within five points heading into the fourth.

Hawkins had 22 points in the second half.

“Dominique took over in the second half,” Feldhaus said.

After St. Xavier missed several free throws in the final minutes, the Indians got the ball back with three seconds left and one last chance to tie the game.

“We drew up a play for (Ken-Jah) to get the ball near mid-court,” Feldhaus said. “He took a couple of dribbles and he had people in his face.”

Bosley had 15 points, despite battling an illness, and Hunter Stocker had seven points for the Indians.

Central got outstanding performances from three backups. Demarcus George had 10 points and five rebounds, Sam Jones had eight points and Coty Alexander had eight points, including two big three-pointers.

“Our junior varsity guys — Sam Jones, Demarcus George and Coty Alexander — they came in a played great,” Feldhaus said. “They acted like they belonged out there.”
