H.S. FOOTBALL: Eminence tops Berea

BEREA — After a defensive battle in the first half, Berea Community and Eminence abandoned any sense of defense in the second half, with the teams combining for 60 points in the final two quarters.

Eminence scored a late touchdown to tie the game and converted the 2-point conversion for the game-winner, spoiling Homecoming for the Pirates with a 38-36 victory.

“That one hurt,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said of the loss. “We came in here with what I thought was a good plan. Offensively, I think we executed well.”

Berea fullback Hunter Wilson ran around tacklers, through tacklers and carried tacklers for extra yards, rushing 34 times for 339 yards and four touchdowns.

Overall, Berea had 413 yards of offense, but couldn’t stop the Eminence passing attack led by quarterback Justin Mitchell.

“That’s hard to take and not come out with a win,” Coleman said of the offensive display by the Pirates.

The Pirates were trailing 30-28 with 5:26 to play and had the ball at their own 34-yard line.

Wilson rumbled for 32 yards to put the ball at the Eminence 34-yard line.

On fourth-and-five from the 29-yard line, Wilson powered over two defenders for a 6-yard gain and the first down.

He then carried a tackler 10 yards to the 13-yard line.

From there, Wilson, with one guy hanging onto his shirt, ran right over a tackler at the goal line, scoring from 13 yards out to give the Pirates a 34-30 lead.

Quarterback Deondre Tate connected with receiver Eli Woodie for the 2-point conversion and a 36-30 lead with 2:09 remaining in the game.

Eminence needed two plays to tie the game.

Mitchell rolled right, rolled all the way to the left sideline, then switched directions again and rolled right, finally finding a receiver open for a 65-yard scoring strike.

The Warriors converted the 2-point conversion for a 38-36 lead.

“Give them credit, they didn’t quit,” Coleman said of Eminence. “We were chasing him back on their own 30-yard line, about to have him sacked, and we just didn’t finish.”

Berea had one last chance, getting the ball at their own 28-yard line with 1:37 to play, but couldn’t get a first down and turned the ball over on downs.

Berea (1-4) led 8-0 after one quarter and was in front 8-6 at halftime.

Wilson had 17 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown in the first half and rushed 17 times for 259 yards in the second half.

Eminence scored two touchdowns in the first 1:57 of the second half to go up 18-8.

An interception by Berea’s Chris Watkins — who had three interceptions in the game — gave Berea the ball at their own 35-yard line.

On their first play, Wilson raced 65 yards for the score, cutting the lead to 18-14.

Trailing 24-14, Berea forced a three-and-out, getting the ball at the Eminence 49-yard line.

A 30-yard run by Wilson and two rushes for 10 yards by Devin Hester gave Berea first-and-goal from the 9-yard line.

Wilson broke two tackles and raced into the end zone.

He also scored the 2-point conversion, cutting the lead to 24-22.

Eminence went back in front 30-22.

With 9:24 to play Berea had the ball at their own 17-yard line.

Wilson ran once for four yards, then took off down the left sideline for a 71-yard scamper, putting the ball at the 8-yard line.

On fourth down, Tate found Woodie open over the middle for a 7-yard scoring strike, pulling Berea within 30-28.

Eminence turned the ball over on downs and Berea raced down field, taking the lead, only to see Eminence score the game-winner.

Berea plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Paris.
