BEREA —
The Berea Community football team had a much needed week off last week.
After opening the season with a 38-0 trouncing of Trimble County, the Pirates have lost three straight games away from home.
Berea (1-3) will look to get back on track with some home cooking tonight during the Homecoming game when Eminence comes to town.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The week off has been huge for the Pirates.
“We had a good week,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said. “I had planned to take the first part of the week off, but I felt it was important to get our kids back out on the field. We went after it on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We had a bit more contact than we normally would have and we really evaluated personnel,” he said. “We’re not changing the whole system. We’re just trying to evaluate more and see who we’ve got and put them in the best positions to help us be successful.”
Over the past three games Berea has allowed 114 points (38 per game) and has been held to 52 total points (17.3 per game).
The Pirates have struggled with penalties, turnovers and mistakes, falling in recent weeks to Gallatin County (40-6), Bethlehem (30-18) and Nicholas County (44-28).
Those three teams are a combined 12-3 this season.
It doesn’t get any easier tonight.
Eminence is 3-1.
Being at home will be key for the Pirates.
“We haven’t played at home in a month, so it truly will be a homecoming,” Coleman said. “We have three of our next six games at home and I think the kids will respond to that. It’s a whole lot different getting ready in your own facility and walking out on your own field.”
Eminence has a rushing attack by committee, with three players having rushed for more than 100 yards and five that had rushed for at least 83 yards.
Leading the way is Bradley Foree, who has rushed 28 times for 237 yards and eight touchdowns.
Also getting carries are Justin Mitchell (172 yards), Demarcus Bailey (132), Daishon Moore (88) and Shelby Armstrong (83).
Mitchell is 46-for-82 passing for 652 yards and four touchdowns.
He has thrown six interceptions this season.
Eminence has struggled on defense against the run, allowing 1,045 yards (261.3 yards per game).
Berea’s strength is its rushing attack, led by Zach Cunningham, Hunter Wilson and Devin Hester.
“We’re going to try to pound them with the ball,” Coleman said. “There’s nothing worse than beating you to death with the ball, and that’s what we’re going to do. We think we can run against this team and limit their possessions.”
Berea’s passing game has also come along.
After going 0-for-5 in the season opener, freshman quarterback Deondre Tate threw for 112 yards against Gallatin County and 175 against Nicholas County.
Still, Berea needs to eliminate mistakes.
“Our biggest nemesis this season has been ourselves,” Coleman said. “We shoot ourselves in the foot with critical errors in critical situations. We’re having a hard time overcoming those mistakes. We make a mistake, then compound it with another mistake. If we make a mistake we have to come back on the next play and forget about it.
