Several Madison County swimmers put themselves in position to win individual titles with strong performances Friday in the preliminaries of the Region 5 Meet at Eastern Kentucky University.
Three Madison Central standouts — Caroline Smith, Morgan Lakes and Summer Spillman — each finished with the best qualifying time in their events. Five other swimmers also qualified for the finals in at least one individual event.
The Region 5 Meet concludes with the finals in each event today, beginning at 11 a.m.
Spillman finished with the top time in the 100 breast and the second-best time in the 200 IM. Lakes was the top qualifier in the 200 IM and had the second-best time in the 500 free. Smith had the top time in the 100 free and was the third-fastest qualifier in the 200 free.
Madison Central’s Molly Ford qualified for the finals in two events (second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free). On the boys side, Madison Central’s Chase Baldwin (fifth in the 100 back and sixth in the 200 IM) and Alex Linkenheld (second in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 free) also qualified for the finals in two events.
Model’s Justine Schwartz had the sixth best time in the 100 fly and Model’s Matt Robbins qualified for the finals in the 50 free (third).
The top six qualifiers advance to the finals.
The next 12 finishers in the preliminaries will compete in two consolation heats.
In the relay events, five Madison Central teams qualified for the finals.
Madison Central’s girls finished with the second-fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay and the third-fastest time in the 400-yard free relay.
On the boys side, Madison Central’s boys finished with the third-fastest time in the 200-free relay and the fifth-fastest time in the 200-yard medley. Model had the fourth-best time in the 200-yard free relay.
Model and Madison Central had several other swimmers earn a spot in the consolation finals.
Qualifiers for Model include: Justine Schwartz (200 free), Lauren Shepherd (50 free, 100 back), Maddy Nasrallah (100 free), Cameron Sidor (500 free), Devin Dirks (50 free, 100 fly), James Schwartz (100 fly, 500 free), Sam Shepherd (100 free, 100 breast), Parker Jackson (100 free and 100 breast), Phillip Brochu (100 free, 100 back) and Jonas Welsing (100 breast).
Qualifiers for Madison Central include: Loren Collins (200 free and 500 free), Eliza Miller (200 free, 500 free), Tilly Baldwin (200 IM, 500 free), Hadley Neal (100 breast), Emma Palmer (100 breast), Mitchell Collins (200 free and 100 breast), Jake Reynolds (100 free) and Trent Lakes (200 free and 500 free).
Berea had two swimmers qualifiers for the consolation heats — Major McGraw (50 free) and Taylor Justice (100 breast).
Madison Southern had one swimmer advance to today’s action — John Eipert (100 breast).

Mackenzie Wilder took a no-hitter into the seventh-inning and Madison Central picked up its fourth straight softball district championship, beating Madison Southern 4-0 Wednesday night at Gertrude Hood Field at Eastern Kentucky University.

44th District baseball, softball postponed
The opening games of the 44th District softball and baseball tournament did not make it out of the second inning Monday evening before the teams were forced off the field.
Both games were later postponed because of rain and lightning. -
BOWLING: Cracraft leads the way at Galaxy
The top scores bowled at Galaxy last week were a 269 game by Matt Cracraft in the Monday Mixed League and a 719 series by Randy Burgess Sr. in the non-sanctioned Wednesday Summer League.

Judging only by the results of the regular-season meetings between the four Madison County schools, it would be nearly impossible to predict the outcome of this week’s 44th District Softball Tournament.
