BOWLING: New season kicks off at Galaxy

RICHMOND — The 2012-13 bowling season is underway at Galaxy. The official USBC season runs from Aug. 1 through July 31 each year.

The non-sanctioned Cash Money League and two women’s leagues — Galaxy Girls and Early Birds — opened their seasons last week.

The Cash Money League will bowl a 16-week fall schedule, while the women’s leagues will each bowl a full season of 30 weeks.

The top-level Galaxy Classic League will open its season tonight with an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. followed by the first session of bowling.

The Arlington women’s league will start on Sept. 4 at 9:30 a.m.

The starting dates for the remaining Galaxy leagues, all of which use a starting time of 6:30 p.m., are: Wednesday Wonders — Sept. 5; Classic Doubles — Sept. 6; TGIF — Sept. 7; Friday Night Mixed — Sept. 7 and Bad Bowlers No-Tap — Sept. 11.

All leagues use handicapped scoring which allows all the teams a chance to compete for league titles.

There is space available for teams and individuals in all leagues. Call Galaxy at 624-4444 to register or come to the first meeting to join one or more leagues and enjoy America’s No. 1 participant sport.

League Highlights

Galaxy Girls

The top games bowled on the first night in this league last Tuesday were 190 by Mary Marcum and 189 by Tammy Fourre, while the highest series scores were 493 by Rita Roberts and 488 by Michelle Ratliff.

Sherry Ernst converted a 5-10 and a 2-4-5-10 split.

Early Birds

Gail Campbell rolled the first women’s 200 game of the season with a 212 score Wednesday. Joyce Kearns bowled the second-best score with a no-miss 191 game.

Campbell also bowled the high series for the day at 525 followed by Beverly Shearer (518) and Karen Kensicki (510).

Shearer converted a 5-10 split.

Best 2011-12 women’s scores at Galaxy

The best averages, series scores and game scores recorded by the men at Galaxy during the 2011-12 season were reported in last week’s column.

The top performances by the women at Galaxy last season are noted in today’s column.

Sandy Reynolds captured the “triple crown” for the women with the highest average, highest series score and a tie for the highest game score.

Reynolds compiled the top average at 180 in 84 games in the TGIF League. Andi Daly was next at 178 in 39 games in the Galaxy Classic League.

The names and averages for the 13 women who averaged 160 or higher for the past season are listed later in this column.

Scores from multiple leagues are not combined to develop an average, thus bowlers may compile an average in more than one league. The averages listed in this column are the woman’s best average in any one sanctioned league at Galaxy.

The United States Bowling Congress requires a bowler to roll a minimum of 21 games in a league for the average to be considered official.

The highest women’s series was 677 by Reynolds, who also bowled series scores of 605 and 602.

Andi Daly rolled two 600 series (631 and 602). Four other women also bowled a 600 series as noted in the top series scores listed below. Six women rolled series scores ranging from 598 to 579.

According to records retrieved from Maroon Lanes, the highest women’s series scores ever bowled in local leagues were 716 by Elaine Koroluk in Oct. 1989 and 712 by Margaret Tilsley in June 1991.

Reynolds and Narita Rose bowled the top 2011-12 women’s game at 257 each. Rose’s score was achieved in the City Tournament. Ten other women bowled games higher than 225.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
I don't care.
