H.S. HOOPS: Lady Indians set to take on Scott County again

MADISON COUNTY — The Lady Indians got off to a slow start in the opening minutes of a regular-season showdown last month with long-time rival Scott County in Georgetown.

The Lady Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead on Madison Central.

“We gave up too many offensive rebounds,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said. “We were just really lethargic in the first two or three minutes of the game. We called a timeout and the demeanor started to change. It’s hard to go up to Scott County and get a win.”

The Lady Indians were able to bounce back, pretty quickly.

Central (26-4) put together a 12-2 run and went on to pick up a 70-53 win.

The teams are set to meet again today in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament at McBrayer Arena.

Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to play either Frankfort (19-8) or Dunbar (16-11).

“We’ve been talking all week about taking care of business,” Cooksey said. “Our main thing is we’ve got to defend and we’ve got to rebound. If we do those two things then our offense will take care of itself.”

Rebounding was a problem in the first meeting with Scott County (20-11).

Scott County’s Tereka Guyn scored six of her team’s first 14 points, all on offensive rebounds and putbacks. She finished with a game-high 24 points and 16 points.

The Lady Indians did hold the Lady Cardinals to just 29 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers.

Senior point guard Larryn Brooks led Central with 22 points, seven assists and six steals. Senior forward Ashton Feldhaus had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Bailey O’Bryan had 15 points.

Brooks has been battling some nagging injuries recently, but still helped lead the Lady Indians to a sixth-consecutive 44th District Tournament title last week.

The senior had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the opening round  against Berea and 17 points in the title game against Madison Southern.

“She’s beat up,” Cooksey said of Brooks. “She’s hurting.”

The senior point guard did get to rest late in both games and should be ready to go against Scott County.

“We were able to get her some rest and that was a big help,” Cooksey said.

Scott County lost junior point guard Audriana Christopher just after the Christmas break. The Lady Cardinals have moved Laura Szorenyi, an exchange student from Hungary, from shooting guard to the point.

She scored a team-best 14 points in the Lady Cardinals’ loss to Bryan Station in the 42nd District Tournament last week. Szorenyi is averaging almost 16 points a game on the season.

“I think it’s made it a little more difficult for them to get everyone involved, especially when you’ve got a kid who really, really wants to score running the point,” Cooksey said of moving Szorenyi to the point. “She’s a kid you have to account for every time up the floor.”
