H.S. SWIMMING: Baldwin, Lakes move into finals

RICHMOND — Madison Central’s Morgan Lakes and Chase Baldwin posted impressive performances Friday in the preliminary round of the KHSAA State Swim Meet at the University of Louisville.

Lakes had the ninth-best time in the 200 IM and the 13th best time in the 500-yard freestyle. Baldwin had the ninth-best time in the 100-yard backstroke and the 13th-best time in the 200-yard IM.

Both swimmers will move on to today’s consolation finals in both events.

The top eight performers in each preliminary event move on to the championship final. The next eight-fastest swimmers all qualify for the consolation finals.

Madison Central also had two relay teams move on to the final day of competition.

The 200-yard free relay had the ninth-fastest time and the school’s 200-yard medley relay had the 15th-best time in the preliminary rounds.

Both will compete in today’s consolation finals.

Central’s Caroline Smith finished 17th in the 100-yard free and 20th in the 200-yard free Friday in the preliminaries. Central junior Molly Ford was 17th in the 50-yard free and 21st in the 100-yard free.

Other Central swimmers who competed Friday in the preliminaries included: Abigail Thompson (27th - 100-yard backstroke), Tilly Baldwin (28th — 500-yard free) and Trent Lakes (31st — 500-yard free).

Model’s James Schwartz finished 28th in the 500-yard free preliminaries.

Model had five relay teams qualify for the state meet. The 200-yard medley boys relay finished 19th, the 400-yard free boys relay finished 20th, the 200-free boys relay finished 21st, the 400-yard free girls relay took 29th and the 200-yard medley girls relay was 31st.

Central’s 400-yard freestyle girls relay finished 18th.
