H.S. VOLLEYBALL: Central handles Southern, 3-0

BEREA — Madison Southern filled the gym with a rowdy crowd and seemed to feed off the adrenaline, taking the early lead.

But, Madison Central took control late and silenced the crowd, rallying to beat the Lady Eagles 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-12) Thursday night in district volleyball action.

“Any time it’s district and any time it’s Madison Southern it’s a big win. It’s rival against rival,” said Central coach Elizabeth Morrow. “One thing about the Madison Southern fan base is they come in and they rock. When you come in here, you’re not only playing against the team, you’re playing against the fans.”

Central (2-4 overall, 2-0 in District 44) seemed off-balance early and trailed 7-2 in the first game, before storming back to go up 13-12.

Southern (1-5, 0-1) scored three straight points, getting one point on a kill by Jackie Shepherd, to take the lead back, 15-13.

The Lady Indians responded with six straight points.

Central’s Payton Templeton had a pair of kills off a spike and a tip, Riley Lane and Brooke Morrow each had a kill and Lane served an ace as the Lady Indians went up 19-15.

Every time Southern got a sideout, Central got the serve right back, getting two kills from Lindsay Noland, one by Morrow and aces by Templeton and Morrow to pull within game-point, 24-20.

Katie Stuart blasted a kill to close out the game.

“I think they fed off the energy,” Southern coach Jeremy Grant said of his team. “They were up, they were ready, then the initial wave began to subside and Central took advantage of some things we don’t do good on defense. (Central) kept pecking away and the next thing you know you look up and they’re up two or three points.”

The second game was tied 6-6 when Central went on another run, outscoring Southern 19-5 to win the game.

Central added four more aces, including three in a row by Templeton, one of which smashed off the face of a Southern player.

Lane added an ace and a tip by Haleigh Morris and a kill by Stuart gave Central the 25-11 victory.

“When we first started out this season our serving wasn’t as good as we hoped,” Lane said. “We’ve been working a lot on it.”

The third game was never close, as Central rushed out to leads of 4-0 and 6-1.

Southern tried to rally, but the Lady Eagles continued to have trouble handling the Lady Indians serves.

Morris, Stuart and Noland all had aces and the Lady Indians closed the game when a kill by Hayden Cremeens was returned long.

“We’ve started out slow all year,” Morrow said. “Our serving and passing was much better tonight.”

Despite the loss, Grant said he was happy with the way the Lady Eagles played.

“We’ve not played well the past couple weeks,” he said. “I think this is the best effort we’ve probably seen all season. I think the wind just went out of our sails.”

Central plays at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Rockcastle County.

Southern competes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Dink Scott Memorial Tournament at Montgomery County.
