RICHMOND —
Coming off a tough loss, the Patriots wanted to get back on track before their first district showdown of the season.
They did just that Tuesday in Richmond.
Taylor Gentry, John Reisig, Noah Valencia and Andrew Wylie had two goals each as Model Laboratory (2-1) rolled past Southwestern, 9-0, at home. Chris Wylie also had a goal in a game that was called because lightning with 27 minutes left in the second half.
“The kids played hard,” Model coach Steve Savage said. “They played defense like we should play defense. I thought the defense turned everything around. Our kids have shot well all year and hopefully that will continue.”
The blowout win helped the Patriots erase some of the bad memories of a tough loss to Kentucky Country Day on Saturday at home. Model led 5-3 with 20 minutes left, but suffered a 7-5 loss.
“It was a real disappointment,” Savage said. “It was a wake-up call. The same thing happened last year.”
Kentucky Country Day beat Model, 4-1, last season. The Patriots didn’t lose again until they suffered a 1-0 loss to Dunbar in the 14th Region title game.
Model got things going early.
Andrew Wylie scored twice in the first 11 minutes and Valencia and Gentry added goals to get the Patriots a 4-0 lead before a lightning delay forced the players from the field.
In the final four minutes of the half, Model scored twice more once play resumed.
Chris Wylie and Reisig found the net to give the Patriots a 6-0 lead.
“Sometimes the strikers score a lot. Sometimes the midfielders score,” Savage said. “It’s amazing how it’s spread around.”
Reisig, Valencia and Gentry all scored in the second half.
Valencia and Andrew Wylie had two assists each, while Gentry, Reisig, Chris Wylie and Andrew Yoder each had one assist.
Model is set to return to action Thursday at home against Madison Southern. That game will be the first district matchup this season for both teams.
“These games against district opponents, you just never know what is going to happen,” Savage said.
