BEREA —
The Berea Community football team needed 61 seconds to put Trimble County away.
Berea scored a pair of touchdowns over a span of 1:01 in the first quarter, building a quick 16-0 lead.
The defense took over from there, shutting down the Raiders during a 38-0 victory Friday night.
“I was really pleased with our defensive effort,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said. “I like the way our kids played. I felt like we played hard.”
Coleman said that Trimble County runs the same kind of offense as Berea, which had the Pirates well prepared for everything the Raiders threw at them.
After stuffing Trimble County on its opening possession, the Pirates drove down the field, scoring on a 1-yard run by Zach Cunningham.
Quarterback Deondre Tate hit Hunter Wilson with a pass for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.
Berea forced a fumble on the kickoff and Brenton Phillips recovered the ball at the 36-yard line.
Three plays later Cunningham took a sweep to the right and rumbled 35 yards for the score.
Devin Hester ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0.
Cunningham added a third score in the second quarter on a 7-yard run.
Wilson ran in the 2-point conversion for a 24-0 lead at halftime.
“It was good blocking by the line, the holes opened up, we just had to read the holes,” Cunningham said. “We were looking to take it to the house every chance we got.”
While the Berea offense was racking up the yards, the Berea defense held Trimble County without a first down until there was 2:54 remaining until halftime.
On Trimble County’s second possession, Berea’s Robbie Watkins got into the backfield to tackle the runner for an 8-yard loss.
Berea’s Daniel Hubbard recorded a two-yard loss on third-and-18, forcing a punt.
Hubbard had another tackle for a loss — this time for three yards — on the Raiders next possession and they were forced to punt again.
The big defensive stand happened on Trimble County’s next possession,.
Hubbard chased down the quarterback for a 7-yard sack.
Wilson had a tackle for a 1-yard loss and Watkins got into the backfield again, nailing the runner as he received the pitch and forcing a fumble.
By the time Trimble County punted the Raiders were facing fourth-and-45.
“At the beginning of the pre-game I told our line that the heart and soul of our game is our line,” Hubbard said. “If we win a game we have to have our line. There’s five of us going each way and we have to keep it going and be the heart and soul of the team.”
In the second half, Wilson scored on a 5-yard run and Hester hit the end zone from seven yards out.
Tate passed to Eli Woodie for one 2-point conversion.
Trimble County was driving late in the game when Berea forced a fumble.
The Pirates recovered the ball and ran out the clock to earn the shutout.
Berea did lose two scores on penalties.
Woodie returned a punt for a 35-yard touchdown that was called back and Hester had a 41-yard scoring run called back.
Both drives ended without Berea scoring.
“We really shot ourselves in the foot,” Coleman said. “That’s something we have to fix this week.”
Berea plays at 6 p.m. Saturday against Gallatin County in the Grant County Gridiron Bowl.
