H.S. FOOTBALL: Following OT loss, Eagles set for Homecoming matchup with Powell County

BEREA — After a heartbreaking overtime loss last week in the home opener, the Madison Southern football team is looking to get back into the win column tonight when Powell County comes to town for the annual Homecoming game.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Southern (1-2) lost its season opener 48-27 at Bourbon County, then picked up a 47-0 victory two weeks ago at Lynn Camp.

Last week the Eagles and Wayne County were tied 14-14 after regulation.

Southern had the ball first in overtime, taking a 21-14 lead on a 9-yard run by Damien Harris.

Wayne County scored a touchdown on its possession, and the Cardinals went for two, converting the play for a 22-21 victory.

Harris led the Eagles, rushing 17 times for 205 yards and three touchdowns.

In two games this season the sophomore has rushed for 457 yards and eight touchdowns.

Senior Coty Russell, who rushed 30 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns against Bourbon County, has missed the past two games. Russell is expected to be back this week from a suspension.

Buddy Harrison (21 carries, 122 yards, two touchdowns), Wes Proctor (6 rushes, 57 yards) and fullback Logan Coomer (16 carries, 56 yards) have also contributed for the Eagles, who have rushed for 792 yards this season.

Quarterback Adam Simpson has rushed 11 times for 89 yards and a touchdown and is 17-for-35 for 209 yards and a touchdown.

Powell County (0-3) has struggled this season.

The Class 3A Pirates have been outscored 126-46.

Last week Powell County lost at home to Lewis County, 28-7.

The Pirates have also lost to Pikeville (53-12) and Pike County Central (45-27).

Southern is facing an important stretch.

It was at this point last season that the Eagles struggled, with a loss to Wayne County (38-27) starting a five-game losing streak.

This season, though, has seen major changes for the Eagles under second-year coach Jon Clark.

A year ago the Eagles averaged 203.7 rushing yards per game and allowed 313.7.

Through three games this season, Southern has averaged 264 rushing yards per game and are allowing only 178.6.

At this point last year the Eagles had been outscored 102-90, but this season have outscored the same three opponents 95-70.

Tyler Hagan, who led the defense last year with 105 tackles, has 27 this season.

Aaron Sipple has nine tackles, William Dean and Bryon Gill have eight and Matt Howard, Brett Sipple and Proctor have seven.

Southern has also forced five turnovers through three games, after getting only 11 in 10 games last season.

Since Southern plays in one of the larger districts in the state, the Eagles will follow the Powell County game by jumping straight into district competition with five straight distirict contests.

Only the top four teams advance to the Class 5A state playoffs, which begin Nov. 2 at the home of the higher seed.

Last year Southern finished 2-8 overall and 1-4 in district, narrowly missing the state by placing fifth in district.
