H.S. SOCCER: Model beats Madison Central 3-1, finishes district play undefeated

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory boys soccer team finished district play undefeated for the second consecutive year, knocking off Madison Central, 3-1, Thursday night at Bellevue.

Senior John Reisig scored all three goals for the Patriots, who have won eight straight and are now 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in District 44.

Central falls to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in district.

Reisig scored once in the first half as the Patriots built a 1-0 lead at halftime.

He scored two more goals in the second half, giving Model a 3-0 lead, before Central scored a late goal to cut the margin to 3-1.

Model has outscored district opponents 17-1.

“When we play Madison Central the form we’ve been playing goes out the window and I’m sure the form they’ve been playing goes out the window and you just play as hard as you can and hope the luck goes your way,” Model coach Steve Savage said. “We were playing pretty well defensively. It’s a good feeling being undefeated going into district.”

The game was scoreless through the first 28 minutes.

With 11:26 to play Model was awarded a free kick about 30 yards out on the side of the field.

Andrew Wylie sent a long pass to the far post, and Reisig out-leaped the Central defense, heading the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

“That first goal was amazing,” Savage said. “John got a beautiful head on it.”

Reisig, who now has 22 goals on the season, said he was expecting Wylie to send the ball over everybody.

“I set up at the penalty spot,” Reisig said. “I ran in there unblocked and got my head on it. It was a great ball by Wylie.”

Early in the second half Central’s Daniel Parke had a 1-on-1 with Model goalkeeper Turner Curtis.

Curtis blocked the shot, but the rebound went right to Central’s Evan Roberts.

Curtis, though, recovered and made the save.

A few minutes later Model made it 2-0.

Model sent a long ball over the Central defense, and Reisig was off to the races, trying to beat Indians’ defender Sean Livingston to the ball.

Livingston and Central goalkeeper Ben Durham both went for the ball, and got tangled up, and Reisig ran the ball down and scored on an open net.

“Luckily I was in good position,” Reisig said. “They blocked each other and I ran around them.”

With 10 minutes left in the game Reisig scored on another breakaway.

Chris Wylie sent a long pass over the Central defense, and once again Reisig slipped past the defense for the goal and a 3-0 lead.

“The last two goals were basically speed,” Savage said. “We were putting the ball through and running on to it.”

Central avoided the shutout with a goal with 5:33 remaining.

A corner kick by Evan Roberts was batted around by a few players, going right to Logan Baker, who knocked the ball into the back of the net.

“The difference between our two teams is that play with team heart and we haven’t,” Central coach Jeremy Anderson said. “Technically I think we’re more sound, possession wise and soccer knowledge I think we’re more sound, but when you play a team that plays direct and wants to win every ball, and that’s all they do to you over and over again it’s frustrating. They have that camaraderie for each other and our team doesn’t and that’s been our biggest problem all season.”

Model plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Franklin County. Central competes Saturday in the Colonel Classic at Bourbon County High School.
