H.S. FOOTBALL: Bluejackets hold off Berea

RICHMOND — One big play turned the momentum for Nicholas County and the Bluejackets were able to use that momentum to down Berea 44-28 Friday night in Carlisle.

Berea (1-3) was down 30-28 and was driving when Nicholas County intercepted the ball at the goal line and returned the pick for a touchdown and a 38-28 lead.

Nicholas County added a late score for the final margin.

“They ran the ball on us real well,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said. “I was disappointed defensively. They found some areas that they were able to run in and used a couple reverses at opportune times that hurt us.”

The Pirates got off to a good start.

Devin Hester ran for a 40-yard touchdown to give Berea a 6-0 lead.

Quarterback Deondre Tate hit Eli Woodie on a 50-yard pass for another touchdown.

After Hunter Wilson ran in the 2-point conversion the Pirates were up 14-0.

“We were rolling along at that point,” Coleman said. “We were sitting in good position.”

Nicholas County came storming back, tying the game 14-14 at halftime.

The Bluejackets scored on their first play in the third quarter, taking a 22-14 lead.

Berea cut the lead to 22-20 on a touchdown run by Wilson.

The teams traded scores as Nicholas County went up 30-28 late in the game.

That’s when Berea was driving for the go-ahead score, but turned the ball over.

“We can be a pretty good team, we just have to eliminate mistakes,” Coleman said. “We just haven’t been able to overcome those mistakes.”

Berea is off next week, before playing the Homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at home against Eminence.
