MADISON COUNTY —
The Lady Colonels (13-8, 7-3 OVC) fell 75-60 to UT-Martin (11-13, 6-4 OVC) on the road Tuesday, snapping their three-game win streak.
The loss drops EKU into a three-way tie at the top of the OVC Eastern Division standings, along with Belmont and Tennessee Tech, with 7-3 conference records.
The Lady Colonels came back from an early 13-5 deficit and took their first lead at 16-14 on a three pointer by Brittany Coles.
The lead changed hands three times before the Lady Skyhawks regained the lead at 24-22 in the midst of a 10-0 run and went into the locker room with a 31-24 lead.
After the Lady Skyhawks pushed their lead to 38-30, the Lady Colonels’ offense began to heat up a little and Marie Carpenter’s fourth three-pointer of the game pulled EKU to within 44-41 midway through the second half.
The Lady Skyhawks quickly responded with another 10-0 run behind their two all-conference guards, Heather Butler, who finished with 24 points, and Jasmine Newsome, who finished with 27 points.
The Lady Colonels could never get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Carpenter lead the way for the Lady Colonels with 17 points and three rebounds.
Alex Jones had her 33rd career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Jade Barber finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
Raechelle Gray added nine points, six rebounds and seven assists, while Miranda Maples and Brittany Coles had three points each and LaRa’e Allen had two points.
The Lady Colonels defense held the high-octane Martin offense pretty much in check in the first half, limiting the Lady Skyhawks to 30.3 percent shooting from the floor and the leagues best three-point shooting team to only 21.1 percent from behind the arc.
The second half, the Martin offense rebounded and hit 48 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from behind the three-point line.
The Lady Colonels finished the game shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from behind the three-point line.
EKU outrebounded Martin 44-33, but the Lady Colonels committed 23 turnovers, while forcing the Lady Skyhawks into 12 turnovers.
The Lady Colonels return to action Saturday at Morehead in a 5:15 tip-off.
