RICHMOND — Lewis Jones Jr. bowled the top scores at Galaxy last week with a 290 game and 743  series in the Wednesday Wonders League.

A 700 series was also bowled by Brandon Simpson, Ronnie Thomas, Barry Miller and Daniel Benge. Details are noted in the league highlights.

The highest women’s game for the week was 222 by Carole Bales in the Galaxy Girls League, while the best women’s series was 593 by Regina Barton in the Galaxy Classic League.

500/600 tournament set for Sunday

The annual 500/600 bowling tournament is scheduled for 2 p .m. Sunday.

A woman who has bowled a 600 series is paired with a partner who does not have a 600 series to her credit.

A team may also consist of two women who have each bowled a 500 series. A team may not include two 600 club members.

Women’s 700 series scores

Narita Rose rolled a 707 series in the Friday Night Mixed League on Jan. 18. At the time, this was believed to be the first 700 series bowled by a woman at Galaxy.

However, a search of the records by the MCBA association manager, Lewis Jones Jr., found that Regina Barton had bowled a 756 series at Galaxy in Feb. 2007. That series included the only 300 game bowled by a woman at Galaxy in league competition.

Two women bowled a 700 series at Maroon Lanes. Elaine Koroluk bowled a 716 series in Oct. 1989 and Margaret Tilsley rolled a 712 series in June 1991.

League highlights

Galaxy Classic

There were four 700 series bowled in this league last Monday with Brandon Simpson (738) and Ronnie Thomas (726) leading the way.

Barry Miller (713) and Daniel Benge (706) also reached this coveted level.

Thomas (279), Simpson (279), Bruce Watson (268) and Aaron Rose (266) rolled the highest games.

Sixteen men bowled a 600 series. David Norman (689), Lewis Jones Jr. (687), Ron Gugel (685), Joe Reichel (678), Glenn Masters (665), Shawn Barton (663), Rose (662), Lynn Estes (655) and Neil Haggard (655) topped the 650 mark.

A 600 series was also rolled by Todd Young (646), Mark Rogers (634), Steve Woltering (629), Mike E. Bryant (624), Bruce Watson (618), Randy Burgess (606) and Ron Roberts (604).

Regina Barton led the league’s ladies with a 215 game and 593 series.



Galaxy Girls

Carole Bales and Narita Rose bowled the top scores in this league last Tuesday.

Bales (222) and Rose (204) rolled the top games, while the best series scores were 588 by Rose and 539 by Bales. Substitute Beverly Shearer bowled a 558 series.

Tiarra Holt converted a 6-7 split.



Early Birds

Pat Harris bowled a no-miss 199 game to lead this league last Wednesday morning. The next-best games were 196 by Beverly Shearer and 190 by Sue Hegelmeyer.

Harris (558) and Shearer (550) also rolled the top series scores for the day.

Joyce Kearns and Betty Allen each converted a 3-10 split.



Arlington

Jan Barnes bowled the top game (188) and series (486) in this league last Tuesday, followed by Connie Bowlin (186) and (477).

Splits were converted by Bowlin (5-10), Sandy Clark (8-10), Linda Drummond (5-10), Yolanda Fritz (4-7-10), Barbara Hendren (2-7), Sue Hegelmeyer (6-7-10), Nancy Ross (8-10) and Beverly Shearer (5-7).



Wednesday Wonders

Lewis Jones Jr. fell just short of bowling the third 300 game of his career last week. Jones Jr. opened his first game with a spare and followed with 11 strikes for a 290 score. He finished with a 743 series score.

Jones Jr. had also rolled a 290 game in Dec. 2010.

Bobby Abrams rolled the second-best series for league members at 617, while the second-best game was 235 by David Norman.

Substitute Mark Rogers rolled a 247 game and 641 series.

Jenny Norman bowled the top women’s series (433) and second-best game (165). Cynthia Eades rolled the high women’s game (166) and Mikki Moren bowled the second-best women’s series (432).

Splits were converted by Eades (7-8), Debbie Jones (5-7) and Kymmi Bowles (4-5-7).



Classic Doubles

Carl Daniels (624) and Steve McKnight (551) bowled the high series scores in this league last Thursday, while the high games were 235 by Mike Huser and 224 by Daniels.

Tina Hisle led the league’s women with a 192 game and 527 series, followed by Beverly Shearer at 180 and 491.

George Bryant and Russell Jones each converted a 5-7 split.



Friday Night Mixed

The high games in this league last week were 279 by John Hickam and 268 by Mark Rogers.

Seven men rolled a 600 series led by Hickam at 693 and Lewis Jones Jr. with a 675 score.

The remaining 600 series were bowled by Rogers (631), Neil Haggard (607), Steve Woltering (603), Bill Bowles (603) and Donnie Barger (600).

Novel Davis (541), Beverly Shearer (523) and Narita Rose (511) bowled the best series scores for the women.

The highest women’s games were 212 by Rose, 200 by Davis and 190 by Shearer.

Kymmi Bowles converted a 4-5-7 split.

This league canceled its session last week because of the weather.



Cash Money

Ronnie Norris Sr. (611) and J. J. Reisig (605) bowled the top series scores in this league last Monday.

Steve McKnight and Sam Spangler tied for the high game for the night at 225.

The high women’s games were 148 by Carolyn McKnight and 141 by Patricia Norris, while the best women’s series were 365 by Mary Mink and 354 by McKnight.



Bad Bowlers No-tap

Nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike in no-tap leagues.

Gary Cromer rolled the first no-tap 300 game of the season in this league last week. Steve Dickey nearly duplicated this feat as he opened his first game with 10 strikes, but he left two pins with his 11th ball and finished with a 288 score.

Dickey (706), Ed Maggard (698) and Cromer (689) rolled the best series scores.

Joanna Dickey (194) and April Brumfield (187) bowled the top games for the league’s women, while the high series were 517 by Dickey and 510 by Brumfield.

Madison Central bests Wayne County

The Madison Central bowling teams tuned up for the regional tournament with a match against Wayne County last Tuesday.

The Central boys blanked the Wayne County boys, 7-0. The best games were 204 by Grant Willoughby and 172 each by Josh Maynard and Adam Cromer.

The Central boys won their Baker matches 172-153 and 104-98.

The Central girls topped Wayne County 5-2 with Elizabeth Rodgers (129) and Kaylee Speakman (122) bowling the high games for the local girls.

The Central girls lost the first Baker match 91-84, but Debborah Harrison bowled two strikes in the 10th frame to lead the Central girls to a 138-80 win in the second Baker match.
