H.S. HOOPS: Smith leads the way as Central tops Southern and Montgomery County

RICHMOND — The Madison Southern Lady Eagles picked up a big 56-40 win Wednesday over Sayre (8-8) in Berea.

The Lady Eagles are 8-15 on the year, but have won three of their past four games.

The Southern defense stepped up and held Sayre’s Gabby Bowie to only 10 points.

“Early we tried to focus on their point guard and make Bowie catch and bring it down the floor then we packed it down in a tight 2-3 zone and tried to make some others hit some shots,” Southern coach Summer Simmons said. “That worked in the half court, but that style of press didn’t work for us. So the second quarter we decided to go with our regular 1-2-1-1 press and that worked out much better and we caused more problems that way.”

The Lady Eagles only led 12-11 after the first quarter, but the defensive change allowed them to outscore the Lady Spartans 15-4 in the second to take a 27-15 at the half.

Once again, Southern struggled coming out of the locker room.

Sayre scored the first seven points of the quarter to cut the lead to 27-22 before the Lady Eagles regrouped to outscore Sayre 15-12 in the quarter to take a commanding 42-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kelley Freeman led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 16 points. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Simmons said Freeman leads by example in games and practice and is now expanding her game to become a more complete player.

“Freeman had a tremendous game. She has always been a three-point shooter and tough defender. Now she is becoming a threat driving to the basket and making the right decisions,” Simmons said.

Samantha Parms had 12 points, while Rachel Ramey had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, Briana Lanham had eight points and eight rebounds, Sarah Smith added six points, Marley Lawson had three and Adriana Willis and Ashlyn Clark had one point each.

Southern is back in action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Monticello.
