H.S. HOOPS: Pirates hold off Burgin, 53-49

BEREA — The Berea Community Pirates (6-11) built a 16-point third-quarter lead then withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by Burgin to hang on for a 53-49 win Tuesday.

The Pirates rode the hot shooting of Trey Terrell, who had 14-first half points, to take a 25-16 lead into the locker room at the half.

Berea scored 10 of the first 12 points after intermission to extend its lead to 35-19 before Burgin got on a roll, going on a 12-1 run to cut the lead to five at 36-31 with 55 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The Pirates pushed their lead back to nine, 46-37, on a basket by Daniel Hubbard and a free throw by Nolan Sweet with four and a half minutes left in the game, but Burgin once again capitalized on turnovers to cut it back to four with 1:23 left in the game.

But one free throw each by Terrell and Andy Allen inside the final 30 seconds and two big blocked shots by Allen and Hubbard preserved the win.

Terrell finished with a team-high 17 points, while Allen had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Dustin Kates added 12 points.

Sweet had three points and Shyiem Alexander had two points.

Berea coach Cameron Jackson said he was pleased with the way his team bounced back after Friday’s loss to district rival Model.

“We made a point in practice after the Model game to slow it down on offense and pick the shot we want to take and the guys really took heed and did that,” Jackson said. “I told the guys that even though we could have won by a little more if we hadn’t done some things wrong late, you’ve got to celebrate wins and you’ve got to celebrate these moments.”

Several times during the game when Burgin was making a run and things were not going Berea’s way, Kates came up with a big basket or a big rebound to change the momentum.

“Kates is quite a guy. His nickname is the ‘Caveman’, but he always gets things done, and he did it here tonight,” Jackson said. “He’s tall and he’s not going to wow you with athleticism, but he’s always in the right spot and he always gets things done.”

Terrell carried the load for the Pirates in the first half and Allen picked up the slack in the second half when Terrell went cold but both had very good games.

Jackson said his team depends on its two stars to carry the load every night.

“Trey and Andy are the backbone of the team and they are going to be special players here and we go as they go,” Jackson said. “Whenever they are playing well like they did tonight, we are tough to beat.”

Berea will be back in action Friday when they host cross-town rival Madison Southern in a district showdown at 7:30 p.m.
