Horn leads Central past Lafayette, 3-1
RICHMOND — Led by Gordo Horn, the Madison Central boys soccer team picked up its second win of week against Lexington school, defeating Lafayette, 3-1, Thursday in Richmond.
Horn had three goals against the Generals. Earlier this week, the Indians rolled to a 5-2 win over Tates Creek.
The Indians (6-1) scored just minutes into the game, when a long cross from Micah Hall found a waiting Gordo Horn on the far side of the goal. Horn split the defender and keeper to make the score 1-0.
“The effort was balanced from the keeper, backline and midfield and forwards,” Central coach Jeremiah Duerson said. “Horn made the scores but the team worked well together protecting the goal and moving the ball up the field.”
Defenders Jeremiah McAlister, Zack Crain, Adam Young and Taylor Deaton diverted strong attacks by the General offense to Grant McIntosh, Hall, Steven Willoughby, Coy Taylor, Daniel Monzon and Horn.
Key runs by the Central offense kept the pressure on Lafayette. A cross from Ben Bucher to Willoughby was headed just wide of the goal. Willoughby followed this effort with a shot from 20 yards out, which was deflected over the bar by the Generals keeper. A cross to Hall from Willoughby was headed wide as well.
In the 32nd minute of the game, the Indians were rewarded with a penalty kick after handball was called in the box. Horn deftly put the PK past the Lafayette keeper.
The only score allowed came early in the second half after two quick passes in the box got a ball past Dunaway.
However, the Indians took just two short minutes after the Generals’ goal after halftime to regain the two-goal lead. Horn received a pass and drove down the right center of the field, hitting a cross shot that found the far side of the net.
Just before half, the hard play resulted in two red cards being served to a player from each team. The Indians made 11 shots on goal. On the defensive side, junior keeper AJ Dunaway had 18 saves.
The junior varsity game saw the Indians shutout the Generals, 3-0.
Central will play host to Madison Southern on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
