RICHMOND —
So close!
Mark Rogers bowled a 299 game last Thursday in the Classic Doubles League. The 8 pin failed to fall on his last ball, denying him a perfect game.
There have been no 300 games rolled at Galaxy during the 2010-11 season, although Lewis Jones Sr. also rolled a 299 game in March.
The last 300 game at Galaxy was rolled by Lewis Jones Jr. on April 9, 2010.
Rogers also rolled the top series of the week at Galaxy with a 648 score.
Krystal Hayes bowled the best women’s game at 220 and Novel Davis the best series at 561.
League Highlights
Classic Doubles
As noted at the top of the column, Mark Rogers just missed bowling the first 300 game of the season at Galaxy.
Rogers opened his first game with 11 strikes, and his 12th roll seemed to be in the pocket, but the 8 pin did not fall leaving him with a 299 score.
Rogers bowled the final 300 game recorded at the Maroon Lanes in March 2001.
Rogers also bowled the top series for the night in this league at 648. Lynn Estes had the next-best series (611) and second-highest men’s game (218). Dean Acker rolled a no-miss 213 game.
Krystal Hayes bowled the top women’s game (220) followed by Novel Davis (212). Davis (561) and Lemetta Dause (536) rolled the best women’s series for the night.
Robert Lamb converted a 5-10 split.
Cash Money League
John Hickam led this league last week with a 266 game and a 626 series. Glenn Masters rolled the second-highest series (622).
Mark Daly and Brandon Simpson tied for the second-best game among league members at 223. Sub David Norman rolled a 224 game.
The best women’s series were 516 by Andi Daly and 507 by Novel Davis.
Davis rolled the top women’s game with a no-miss 208 score, while Christina Wingett had the next-best game at 189.
Splits were converted by Davis (5-10) and Clifford Rose (3-10).
Tuesday No-Tap
Scores are higher than usual in no-tap leagues because nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike
The top series scores in this league were 777 by Brandon Simpson and 720 by Sid Adams. Shayne Smith (677) and Carl Daniels (628) had the next-best men’s series.
The top games for the night were 278 by Simpson and 262 by Smith.
Donna Fourre (668) and Sue Hegelmeyer (636) bowled the best women’s series while the high women’s games were 258 by Hegelmeyer and 236 by Fourre.
Last chance to register for Bluegrass games
This Thursday is the deadline to register on-line for bowling in the Bluegrass State Games. Bowling will be contested on Saturday and Sunday at the Eastland Lanes in Lexington. Information and registration forms are available at www.bgsg.org/bowling.
The fee is $25 for one event and $35 for two events.
There will be singles and doubles competition in six age groups ranging from eight-and-under to 55 and over.
The four bowlers with the highest scores after a three-game series will advance to the medal rounds. The top seed will bowl a one-game match against the fourth seed and the second seed will bowl the third seed. The winners of these semifinal matches will bowl for the gold and silver medals while the losers will bowl for the bronze medal.
Come out and enjoy the fun. Let’s keep bowling an important part of the Bluegrass Games.
KSBA Jamboree
The 27th annual Kentucky State Bowling Association Jamboree was held last weekend at the Strike Zone Lanes in Nicholasville. This is an annual business meeting which is held each July.
It was announced that the 56th Annual Kentucky State Handicap Bowling Tournament will be held during the first three weekends in November at the Joyland Bowl in Lexington. All events — singles, doubles, and team — will be bowled at that center.
Also, the 2012 Seniors State Tournament will be hosted by the Louisville Area Bowling Association with the site to be determined.
The Madison County Bowling Association was represented by president Harvey Poynter, and board members Carl Daniels, David Norman and Dean Acker.
Outside the lanes
Once again, a current baseball event has brought attention to the accomplishments of the late Earle Combs, Madison County’s Baseball Hall of Fame member.
Two weeks ago, the USA Today listed the major league ballplayers who recorded 21 or more triples in one season since 1925. These men were identified because Jose Reyes of the New York Mets already has 15 triples in the first half of this season.
A player has reached 21 triples in a season only 11 times during that period. Combs was the only player to do it more than once as he achieved that total three times.
Derek Jeter recently became the first member of the New York Yankees to record 3,000 base hits.
This accomplishment prompted the publication of the names of the 10 Yankees with the most base hits for that franchise.
Although Combs last played in 1935, he still ranks 10th on the list with 1,866 hits.
Combs’ teammates — Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth — rank second and third after Jeter.
The only other Yankees with more career hits than Combs are Mickey Mantle, Bernie Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey.
Very exclusive company.
