H.S. HOOPS: The celebration rolls on for Central

MADISON COUNTY — For Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus and his team, the past few days have been a bit of a blur.

Since rallying to defeat Ballard in the championship game of the Sweet 16 on Sunday afternoon at Rupp Arena, the Indians have been swept up in a whirlwind of attention that has taken them all across Central Kentucky.

“I think I’ve talked to every radio station in the state of Kentucky and there’s more coming up the next couple of days,” Feldhaus said Tuesday afternoon. “It’s a fun problem to have, but I’ll be glad when it’s over because I don’t think we’ve had time to think about what we’ve accomplished because we’ve been so busy.”

Busy, indeed.

After a dramatic 65-64 win in the state title game in front of more than 17,000 people, the vast majority of which were from Madison County, the Indians returned to Richmond a few hours later. They were greeted by more than a 1,000 people who had lined Main and Second street.

The team rode through downtown on firetrucks, which took them to the school for a pep rally.

“I don’t think it really surprised (the team) all that much because of the support we had at Rupp Arena,” Feldhaus said of the crowds downtown on Sunday evening. “But, coming down Main Street, there were a lot of people.”

The Indians got a bit of break on Monday, which gave them the opportunity to watch assistant coach Kenny Roberts make good on a promise.

He had said he would get his ear pierced if the team won a state title.

The Indians spent most of Tuesday on the road. They headed to Frankfort in the morning and had the chance to be recognized by both houses of the Kentucky legislature, then had the opportunity to meet the Governor.

Later in the day, the received an invitation from John Calipari to come to Lexington and watch a University of Kentucky practice at the Joe Craft Center.

“That was neat,” Feldhaus said of taking the team to UK’s practice. “We got to take pictures with them and a lot of guys hung around after and shot some with them.”

The team wrapped up a hectic, but fun day by being recognized by the Richmond City Commission.

“We started out at the Capitol, then went to the house and senate. We met the Governor,” Feldhaus said. “Then they called and invited us over to Kentucky’s practice. Then we end up down at the city commission meeting.”

The players will be able to return a more normal routine in the next few days, but the coach and his staff still have plenty of things to take care of in the near future.

“I’ve been dealing with ring people. Giant photo people,” Feldhaus said. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it. I’ll be happy to get to Bowling Green to get away from some of this.”

Feldhaus won’t get a break from basketball.

He is set to leave for Bowling Green Thursday to watch his daughter, Ashton, play for Madison Central in the KHSAA Girls Sweet 16.
