H.S. FOOTBALL: Faith leads Cox to KCU

RICHMOND —

Of course, many factors played a role in Darian Cox’s decision to play football at Kentucky Christian University.

But none was more important than his spirituality.

“Without my faith, I wouldn’t be where I am right now,” Cox said. “Without my faith, I’d just be some kid going through the motions, getting in trouble. That’s my identity. That’s why I wanted to go to Kentucky Christian. My faith is my reason for living.”

Even though he had scholarship offers from West Texas A&M and Hanover, the Madison Central senior running back signed a national letter of intent with Kentucky Christian Thursday. Cox was also drawing some interest from Georgetown College and Troy.

“I think Darian’s best years are ahead of him,” Central coach Bert Browne said. “He’s an unbelievable kid. He’s a great human being.”

Cox battled injuries during his senior season, but still was a solid contributor to the Central offense. The senior had 241 yards rushing on 58 attempts and scored four touchdowns. He also had nine catches for 139 yards and a TD.

Cox rushed for a season-best 94 yards and a touchdown in the regular-season finale against Collins and had three catches for 70 yards in a loss earlier in the year to Ballard.

He scored two touchdowns in a win over North Laurel on Aug. 20.

The senior tore his labrum in practice prior to a Sept. 17 showdown against Lexington Catholic and missed that game.

Cox didn’t miss another game, but the injury lingered with him for the rest of the season and limited his playing time, especially at linebacker.

“It was tough, but it was a learning experience,” Cox said.

The senior had six tackles in the season opener against North Laurel and seven tackles against Newport Central Catholic, but he was recruited by KCU as a running  back.

“He’s strong,” Browne said. “He’s going to get stronger.”

Kentucky Christian, which is located in Grayson, just recently launched its football program. The school’s varsity team began play in 2008.

KCU is a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Late last year, the school announced that former National Football League wide receiver Mike Furrey had been named the program’s new head coach.

Furrey played in the NFL for seven seasons with Indianapolis, St. Louis, Detriot, Cleveland and Washington.

“I came on campus and got to meet the coaches and that was the best first impression I could have gotten,” Cox said. “They are good Christian guys and they are ready to build this program, and they are passionate about football.”
