H.S. HOOPS: Lady Indians tame Tigers

RICHMOND — Kristin Congleton didn’t have a point and only attempted three shots Thursday during a victory over No. 6 Clay County (21-4).

Still, there was little doubt of the key role she played.

“Kristin was the MVP of the game,” Madison Central coach Robbie Cooksey.

Congl-eton had 11 rebounds and four blocks and played a big part in slowing down Clay County’s biggest offensive threat — forward Cheyenne Madden — as the Lady Indians picked up a hard-fought 42-38 win in Richmond.

Larryn Brooks had 23 points and Ashton Feldhaus added 11 points for Central (18-4).

“She played great post defense and she had 11 rebounds,” Cooksey said of Congleton. “Madden averages 18 points a game, but we made it real hard on her. She’s a real good player. She’s a hard post player to stop. We didn’t have anyone (besides Kristin) who could match up with her physically.”

Madden finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, but Congleton held the standout in check. Clay County’s top scorer attempted only 14 shots and got to the free throw line just five times. She also had three turnovers.

Congleton played almost the entire game (31:52) and committed just three fouls.

“She’s a really good player,” Congleton said. “I just tried to stay in there and be strong. I tried to keep her off the ball so she wouldn’t get down low. She did a couple of times, but I tried to push her out so she wouldn’t have good position on me.”

Clay County had a one-point lead at halftime (17-16) and ultimately, the outcome came down to several key plays late in the fourth quarter.

With the score tied at 36 and just less than two minutes left, Brooks drove into the lane for a layup. Central would never surrender that lead.

“Either she gets to the hole and gets a shot, or she gets to the hole and finds somebody who is wide open,” Cooksey said of Brooks.

Brooks hit two free throws with a minute left, then a layup by Chrystal Miller with 22.3 seconds left, on a assist from Brooks, sealed the win.

With Madden not allowed to get loose underneath, Clay County tried to get other players involved offensively, but didn’t have much luck.

The Lady Tigers were 0-of-10 from three-point range and didn’t have anyone else in double figures.

Alisha Mitchell, who averages 13 points a game, had just six points as Clay County had just four players score.

“They make you play their style,” Cooksey said. “Even though we tried to press and do some things, they make you play their style of basketball.”

Miller fiinshed with four points, Heather Hinkle had three points and Bailey O’Bryan had one point.

Central suffered a 78-53 loss to Manual last weekend at the Louisville Invitational Tournament, but has bounced back with two straight solid wins.

The Lady Indians have won 12 of their past 13 games and 16 of the past 18 games.

“We’ve put that loss behind us and now we are just trying to finish out the season without losing again,” Congleton said.

Central is set to return to action Saturday at home at 7:30 p.m. against Blazer.
