RICHMOND —
On numerous occasions in the past few years, I’ve been asked the same question by readers of this newspaper.
“How come you don’t cover middle school sports?”
My answer is usually pretty simple.
With only two people in the sports department, it’s simply impossible to get to everything here in Madison County. We do our best to cover the four high schools, EKU, Berea College and a wide variety of youth sports in Richmond and Berea. But honestly, there are only so many hours in the day and only so much room in the newspaper.
That’s the honest truth.
Still, that answer usually doesn’t satisfy the person who asked the question.
And, I can understand why.
Those people just want to see their children highlighted in the local paper. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
So, I’ve put a great deal of thought into this and that’s why I sat down today to write this column.
I believe that with some help from the community, coaches, parents and school administrators, we can make middle school athletics a regular part of this newspaper’s sports section.
It won’t be easy.
There are now seven middle schools in the county — Madison Middle, B. Michael Caudill, Clark-Moores, Model, Berea, Foley and Ferristown — and we want info from each of them on as many sports as possible.
In the coming weeks I plan on making a lot of phone calls and send out a lot of e-mails trying to contact as many people as possible.
This is something I am taking very seriously.
But, I need lots of assistance from lots of people.
In the past, I’ve had some success getting some scores, stats, etc., from local middle schools. But, that info usually was pretty erratic and not very timely or reliable.
I can promise you that we will make an effort to get better middle school coverage, but the success of this endeavor will depend largely on the cooperation of lots of folks.
So, here’s what I need.
If you are the coach or assistant coach of a middle school team in this county, as soon as you finish reading this, send me an e-mail — sports@richmondregister.com
If I don’t know you, introduce yourself and give me your contact info. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
If you are the parent of a middle school athlete in this county, as soon as you get done reading this, e-mail your child’s coach and tell him/her to contact me.
If you are a teacher/administor/athletic director at local middle school, as soon as you get done reading this, e-mail every coach at your school and tell them to contact me.
I have what I think are some very cool ideas for ways we can highlight middle school sports and I would love to get input from as many people as possible as to what they would like to see in the paper.
Let’s make this happen.
It’s always been my goal as the sports editor of this newspaper to get as many local kids in the sports section as often as possible.
That’s the purpose of a local newspaper — to feature local people.
I know that with a little help we can make this happen. I look forward to talking to many of you very soon!
