RICHMOND —
A record turnout of 21 four-person teams teed it up Saturday at Battlefield in an annual fund-raiser for athletics at Madison Southern High School.
It was a gorgeous day for golf and the scores were as hot as the weather.
Raising the flag of victory with a 52, 20-under par, was the team of Cassandra and Kenan McWhorter, Scott Bolin and Jordan Hogue. Second with a 55 was Logan Bicknell, John Helton, Will Travis and Tucker Anderson and taking third place was the team of Terry Dailey, Gary Moyers, Don Bell and Dax Lane, with a 57. In the special events, the long drive for men was won by Joe Centers and for the women, Melanie Grant launched the longest drive. Donnie Northern won closest to the pin contest.
Chairman Doug Sallee conveyed special thanks to the players and to these generous sponsors — Peoples Bank, Central Bank, David Mayo Insurance Agency, Golden Corral, Rose Home Improvement, State Farm Insurance, Eastside Community Church, Sharon Nicely and Tina Bowling.
Thanks to you Doug Sallee for this info and for orchestrating such a successful tournament.
Gracious!
Brandenburg-Russell win MCC member/guest
Last weekend, 18 teams teed it up in the annual member/guest tournament at the Madison Country club.
The format for the 36-hole event was nine holes best ball, nine holes alternate shot and the final 18 holes was a scramble.
Rolling in a lot of birdies, the team of Steve Brandenburg and Mike Russell stepped into the winner’s circle on Sunday evening with a terrific two-day total of 120. Second-place honors went to the team of Hubert Broaddus and George Powell with 122. Third place went to Steve Cosby and Walt Park with a 124.
Prior to the Saturday start of the tournament was the always popular Friday afternoon shootout. After the smoke cleared the last two golfers standing and picking up the marbles were Jimmy Kaiser and Ron Williams. Second-place money went to Tom Pendergrass and Skip Binto. Third place was Derrick Ward and Ron Francis.
On Saturday night, all the players enjoyed a good old country dinner of fried chicken, pork chops, green beans, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and an assortment of pies catered by Opal.
Yum! Yum!
It was another fun tournament at the old MCC. Club manager and chairman Hubert Broaddus did another fine job of putting on a successful event. Hubert said to convey his thanks to all the members and their guests for their participation and helping make it a fun time.
Mahalo!
EKU’S Eriksson ties for 53rd at NCAA Regional
EKU sophomore Johan Eriksson shot his best round in Saturday’s final round of the Division I Men’s Golf Championships Indiana Regional.
It was his first appearance in the NCAA event and he tied for 53rd with a three-round total of 228.
This young Stockholm, Sweden native has really shown a lot of improvement the last half of this year and I believe next year he will move up another notch and be a force to reckoned with in every tournament or match that he plays in.
Go man, go!
MCC loses a good friend
On May 12, the Madison Country Club lost a good friend and long time member when Lieutenant Colonel Percy Hacker left us for that great course in the sky.
Percy had a great love for his family, country, military and the Madison Country Club. I had the pleasure of serving in the National Guard with him in C Battery of the Kentucky National Guard in the early 50s here in Richmond.
Ole Lefty will sorely be missed for that wide stance, slugging that little white pellet around the course and playing rummy with the guys in the card room. I will miss all the verbal ping pong that went on during those games as they discussed every subject under the sun.
I have watched Percy fight skin cancer and other problems for several years and he was so tough I thought he was indestructible.
He never complained.
After Percy’s funeral May 14, Lorna Tribble and the ladies at the MCC invited the family and friends to the club for a luncheon in honor of a favorite son. Percy was blessed to have such a dedicated wife as Shirley, who looked out for him and chauffeured him his last few years.
The Colonel may be gone but not forgotten.
Aloha and may you be in God’s company forever.
