Bowlers net 700 series

RICHMOND — Neil Haggard bowled the top series at Galaxy last week with a score of 717 in the Friday Night Mixed League, This was his fifth 700 series of the season.

Keith Nash joined this season’s 700 club with a 705 series in the Galaxy Classic League.

The highest game of the week was 279 by Lewis Jones, Jr., also in the Galaxy Classic League.

Tina Hisle bowled the top women’s game for the week at 237 in the Classic Doubles League, while the best women’s series was 583 by Andi Daly in the Galaxy Classic League.

League Highlights

Galaxy Classic

Keith Nash and Lewis Jones, Jr. recorded the top performances in this league last Monday.

Nash became the 17th member of this season’s 700 club at Galaxy with a 705 series, and Jones, Jr. bowled the top game at 279. A light hit on the first ball in the tenth frame left the two pin standing and denied Jones, Jr. a chance at a 300 game.

Aaron Rose bowled the second-best game (269) and series (696). Nineteen other men rolled a 600 series led by Jones, Jr. (693), Brandon Simpson (684), Brandon Lutes (674), Randy Burgess, Sr. (672), Mark Rogers (667), John Poynter (658), Matthew Ray (658), and Cody Daly (654).

Also bowling a 600 series were: Scott Kayor (642), Rick Burton (642), Bill Bowles (640), Billy McGuire (633), Mike E. Bryant (632), Neil Haggard (630), Matt Wieczorek (630), Matt Poe (625), Chris Walker (610), Mike Riley (610), and Glenn Masters (605).

Three of the league’s women - Andi Daly (583), Rita Morgan (543), and Judy Poynter (505) - bowled series scores over 500.

There were 66 200-level games bowled by 36 league members at this session. Those who bowled a 200-level game are listed at the end of this column.

Galaxy Girls

The top performance in this league last Tuesday was turned in by Shella Cobb with a no-miss 215 game and 539 series.

Brenda Marcum rolled the second-best series (517) and Amy Felty the second-high game (193).

Cobb converted three splits (5-10, 5-7, and 3-10). Also converting splits were Gail Campbell (2-4-8-10) and Rita Roberts (2-7).

Early Birds

Gail Campbell led this league last Wednesday with a 209 game and 485 series followed by Beverly Shearer at 177 and 474.

Arlington

The top games in this league last Tuesday were 182 by Jan Barnes and 179 by Linda Bowles.

Connie Bowlin (485) and Bridget Settles (455) rolled the top series scores.

Splits were converted by Bowlin (5-10 and 3-10), Merle Motley (3-10), Kathy Palmer (3-10), Grace Robertson (5-10), Kim Owens (6-7), Sherry Ernst (2-7), and Doris Gish (2-7).

The members of this league decided to change from a 32-week season to a split season of two 16-week sessions.

Thus, the leading teams and individuals for the first half of the split season are recognized here.

The Spare Change team (Marietta McBride, Fanny Rice, Barbara Hendren, and Connie Bowlin) finished on top for the fall portion of the season.

Blondes+1 (Sherry Ernst, Lynn Lainhart, Jackie Collier, and Bridget Settles) finished second, while third place in the ten-team league went to No Shows (Joan Mott, Betty Morris, Jamie Carroll, and Margie Isaacs).

The best averages were recorded by Bridget Settles (161), Connie Bowlin (153), Linda Bowles (150), Doris Gish (148), and Becky Fraser (146).

The highest series scores were bowled by Settles (579), Bowles (527), Bowlin (515), Gish (510), and Tina Hunter (504).

Those rolling the top games were: Bowles (233), Hunter (209), Sybil Fagan (209), Settles (207), and Bowlin (205),

Most improved honors went to Roberta Parker.

Wednesday Wonders

The top scores in this league last week were bowled by Aaron Rose with a 682 series and 248 game, and by David Norman with a 253 game and 680 series.

Andi Daly led the league’s ladies with a 189 game and 497 series followed by Julia Landreth at 185 and 492.

Classic Doubles

Tina Hisle led all the bowlers in this league last Thursday with a 237 game and 544 series. Hisle’s 237 game is the third-highest women’s game bowled at Galaxy this season.

Beverly Shearer rolled the second-best women’s series (508) and Gail Campbell the second-highest women’s game (191).

The top men’s games were 204 by Dean Acker and 199 by Carl Daniels, while Gary Holtzclaw (540) and Daniels (529) bowled the best men’s series for the night.

Splits were converted by Shearer (4-5) and Acker (3-10).

Friday Night Mixed

Neil Haggard led this league last week with a 246 game and his fifth 700 series of the season at 717.

Series scores exceeding 600 were also bowled by Lewis Jones, Jr. with a 638 series which included a best game of 238 and Ron Gugel at 616 with a top game of 235.

Novel Davis (473) and Christy Richmond (453) bowled the top women’s series, while the top games were 168 by Wanda Jones and 167 by Richmond.

TGIF

Merle Meade rolled the top scores last week with a 236 game and 594 series followed by Terry Malin at 220 and 536.

The top women’s series were 553 by Sandy Reynolds and 497 by Helen McKnight. McKnight rolled the top game (188) with Reynolds next at 178.

Substitute Beverly Shearer bowled a 222 game and 531 series.

Charles Harris bowled a no-miss 191 game.

Splits were converted by Malin (3-6-7-10 and 5-10), Shearer (5-6), Sue Hegelmeyer (4-5), Mary Kearns (5-6-10), Al McKnight (9-10), and Tib Congleton (3-10 twice).

In a rare occurrence, the Forever Hopeful team (Congleton, Hegelmeyer, and Pat and Charles Harris) bowled the exact same score (623) in all three games.

Cash Money League

This league resumed action Monday after a two-week hiatus for the holidays.

Ollie Gasser turned in the top performance with a 237 game and 658 series. Gary Cromer rolled the second-best series (564), while Anthony Taulbee and John Hickam tied for the second-high game at 205.

Colleen Jackson led the women in the league with a 131 game and 387 series with Janet Bird next in line at 130 and 296.

Bad Bowlers No-Tap

This league opened a new 12-week season last Tuesday.

Nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike in no-tap leagues, so scores in this league are higher than those in leagues with standard scoring.

David Robinson (703) and Ed Maggard (659) bowled the top series scores. They also rolled the top games - 253 for Maggard and 247 for Robinson.

April Brumfield led the league’s ladies with a 227 game and 566 series followed by Joanna Dickey at 186 and 437.

Madison Southern Update

The Madison Southern bowling teams rolled home and away matches against Bryan Station on Jan. 5 and 10.

The boys won five of the possible 14 points in the two matches, but the young girl’s team was not able to win any points.

Southern coach Margaret Tilsley described the Bryan Station girl’s team as awesome; led by Crystal Land who has an average of 207.

The top games by the Southern boys during these two matches were: Dean Reynolds (229), Brian Ford (200), Carson Riley (167), Brandon Ford (167), and Caleb Holbrook (157).

The best games by the Southern girls were: Rebecca Sowder (148), Amber Potts (135), Megan Faught (134), Kelle Scott (128), and Jodeci Collins (119).

The Eagles will host a match with Henry Clay on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Galaxy Center.
