RICHMOND — The Colonels found out officially early Monday morning that their season had not yet ended. Eastern Kentucky University has accepted a bid to play in the College Basketball Invitational. The Colonels will play host to the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. Wednesday at McBrayer Arena. Tickets are available through the EKU ticket office. The Cougars (21-11) finished second in the Southern Conference and are coached by former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins. "There are 347 Division-I teams in the country and we are pleased to be one of the teams who is still playing," EKU coach Jeff Neubauer said. "We are happy with that and to bring a consistent winner into McBrayer Arena and to have Bobby Cremins, who is one of the all-time great coaches in basketball, it is a great tribute to our basketball program." If EKU wins, they advance to the second round and will play the winner of George Washington and Virginia Commonwealth on March 22. Morehead State also accepted a bid to the CBI and will face Colorado State in the first round of the tournament. However, a rematch between the Eagles and the Colonels would only come in the title game if both teams were to advance to that point. "As you look through the NCAA and NIT brackets, you realize that something along the lines of 80 percent of the brackets are made up of teams from the power conferences," Neubauer said. "For us to be a team to continue to play in March is something for us to be proud of." EKU (20-12) fell in four of its last five games of the season, including to No. 4-seeded Eastern Illinois, 68-61, on March 2 in the opening round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Charleston, Ill. The Colonels have not participated in a postseason tournament since the 2006-07 season, when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament with an OVC title game win over Austin Peay. The CBI invites 16 teams and all the games are played at the higher seed's campus site. The first three games of the tournament are single-elimination and the two teams remaining will play a best two-out-of-three series (at alternating campus sites, with the higher seed getting two games if it goes to a third game) for the title. The tournament is in just its third year of existence, with Oregon State beating out UTEP for the championship last year, and Tulsa edging Bradley in 2008 for the inaugural title. The Gazelle Group, which is one of the main sponsors of the tournament, also sponsors the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic and the Legends Classic, which the Colonels have participated in the last two years. The only other OVC team to make it to the postseason was tournament champion Murray State, who is a 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face No. 4-seeded Vanderbilt on Thursday.
