RICHMOND —
Mistakes cost the Madison Southern football team in the season opener.
The Eagles out-rushed and out-passed Bourbon County, but miscues cost them and continually gave momentum to the Colonels, who took advantage to earn a 48-27 victory.
Southern (0-1) looks to right the ship when the Eagles travel tonight to Lynn Camp for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Against Bourbon County, the Eagles rushed for 308 yards and had 399 total yards of offense, while holding Bourbon County to 252 rushing yards and 332 total yards.
But the Colonels returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns and had a drive start at Southern’s 13-yard line after a bungled punt attempt.
That drive led to a touchdown, giving the Colonels three scoring drives that totaled 13 yards.
“We lost by 21 and we had three big mistakes and they ended up with 21 points,” Southern coach Jon Clark said after the game. “Defensively we had some young guys playing so we knew we’d give up a few, but the 21 points we lost by was 21 points of our mistakes.”
Clark said that the Eagles spent this week working on ball security.
“We just can’t turn the ball over,” he said. “If we don’t turn the ball over and we create turnovers I feel good about our chances any week.”
Southern was led by senior running back Coty Russell, who rushed 30 times for 182 yards and a touchdown.
Russell is suspended for the Lynn Camp game, but the Eagles expect to have back sophomore running back Damien Harris (62 carries, 742 yards, 11 touchdowns last year).
Harris has been recovering from a shoulder injury.
Last week Southern senior Wes Proctor rushed six times for 57 yards.
Quarterback Adam Simpson was 8-for-17 for 91 yards and a touchdown and also rushed the ball four times for 26 yards.
John Williams caught five passes for 56 yards and Proctor had a reception for a touchdown.
Tyler Hagan led the defense with eight tackles.
“We feel like our running game is clicking right now,” Clark said. “We’re going to come in and run the ball, but if they give us the pass we’re not afraid to throw it.”
Lynn Camp opened the season on Aug. 17 with a 40-14 victory against East Ridge.
The Wildcats took advantage of four East Ridge turnovers to build a 33-0 halftime lead and snap a 13-game losing streak.
Last week Lynn Camp (1-1) fell to Southern’s district rival South Laurel, 55-6.
“It’s a tough place to play,” Clark said of Lynn Camp. “They’re 1-1. They have a little confidence. They throw the ball around a little more than in the past with the new coaching staff.”
Southern, which ran 72 plays to 28 for Bourbon County, wants to keep possession of the ball and keep pushing the running attack against Lynn Camp, which has struggled to stop the run.
South Laurel rushed for 338 yards against Lynn Camp and finished with 556 total yards.
Last year Southern beat Lynn Camp 42-14.
