KIAC HOOPS: Union holds off Berea College 76-65

Early in the second half, Union College took a seemingly very comfortable lead over the Mountaineers (7-4) at the Seabury Center.

But slowly, Berea College started to chip away at a 21-point deficit (61-50).

And in the final seconds, the Mountaineers had the ball and a chance to send the game into overtime.

However, Ryan Schnellenberger’s potential game-tying three-pointer wouldn’t fall and Union College (6-5) was able to escape with a 76-75 win.

Sophomore Aaron Ponder had a team-best 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Berea and Trent Maddox finished with 13 points. The Mountaineers had 26 turnovers shot just 42 percent.

Berea College had 10 players score and also had 19 assists on 29 field goals.

Union College jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead before the Mountaineers tied the game at 20. Sergio Gonzalez hit a three just before the half that the Bulldogs up 38-29.

A basket by Ponder moments later cut that deficit to seven points at halftime.

Union College scored the first eight points of the second half, starting a 12-2 run that seemed to give the visitors a comfortable lead.

Maddox scored all of his points in the second half as Berea put together a comeback. Ryan Schnellenberger came off the bench to hit a trio of big three pointers and Tevin Webster scored all eight of his points after halftlime.

Berea shot 44 percent from the field in the second half and was five-of-15 from three-point range.

Koty Riley had 11 points, Schnellenberger finished with nine points, Bryce Carlton had six points and Dominique Garmon had five points.

The Mountaineers are set to return to action Sunday at Warren Wilson.
