H.S. HOOPS: Berea Community tops Estill County for third-straight win

BEREA — The Berea Community girls continued their winning ways Monday, steamrolling Estill County 61-47 for the team’s third-straight win.

The Lady Pirates scored the first 11 points of the game on their way to a commanding 21-6 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Eighth-grader Jordan Sandefur scored a team-high 26 points to lead three Lady Pirates in double figures. Junior Chase Fain scored 13 points, including three first-half three pointers, and sophomore Victoria Sexton finished with 10 points.

After Estill County scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the Berea lead to nine, Sandefur began to take over the game, scoring eight points as the Lady Pirates ran off 16 of the next 18 points for their biggest lead of the half at 35-14.

“I thought we jumped out in the first half really well and then we got in a little bit of foul trouble and went to the bench and they cut into the lead in the first half,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said.

The Lady Pirates maintained a comfortable lead until midway through the fourth quarter when foul trouble forced Bingham to abandon his three-guard offense for a time and the Lady Engineers went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to eight with 1:47 to go.

“We are used to three guards and two posts and at the end we had three posts in the game with two guards, so that threw us off on the offensive end and they made their run,” Bingham said. “I think we rushed some things after we got through their press and we rushed some shots here at the end.”

Berea also got production from several other players. Eighth grader Alex Horn scored six points and pulled down four big offensive rebounds after the Lady Engineers made their run at the end of the game, while senior Hannah Haycraft added four points and senior Ashley Sizemore scored two.

Berea hasn’t played a game all season with its full team on the floor, so Bingham said he was happy to be 3-1 on the season.

“Tonight we were missing Miranda Montgomery, so we haven’t had a game yet where we had every kid on the floor, so it is good to win like that,” Bingham said. “This is something we can build on.”

Junior point guard Kennedy Flynn led Estill County with a game-high 30 points.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against East Jessamine in Nicholasville.
