OVC HOOPS: Undefeated EKU set to take on Catamounts

RICHMOND — The Colonels will be looking for their seventh straight win tonight when they take on Western Carolina (3-4) at 7 p.m. in McBrayer Arena.

EKU is coming off one of its best all around games of the year, an 84-51 rout of Delaware State Wednesday. That victory was the Colonels’ 14th straight home win against non-conference opponents.

The EKU defense forced 20 Delaware State turnovers in the game while the offense dished out 26 assists on 34 made baskets, their most assists in a game since 2005.

EKU is the only unbeaten team in the OVC and one of only five unbeaten mid-major teams in the country. The Colonels received 32 votes in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll, good enough for a No. 31 ranking.

The EKU defense, which is allowing only 61 points per game, will be tested tonight as the Catamounts are the highest-scoring team the Colonels have faced all season, averaging 74 points per game. Western Carolina comes in shooting 49.6 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from behind the three-point line.

Western Carolina has three players averaging in double figures, led by 6-foot-2 guard Trey Sumler, who is averaging 18.9 points per game and 4.7 assists. Tawaski King is second-leading scorer for the Catamounts at 13.6 points per game and the leading rebounder at 5.4 per game, while Tom Tankelewicz averages 11 points per game.

The Colonels have shot 50 percent or better in four of their first six games and shot 49 percent in another. They enter the contest shooting 45.3 percent from the floor and 34.2 percent from behind the three-point arc.

The Catamounts are allowing opponents 73 points per game. WCU opponents have shot 44 percent from the field.

This is the third meeting between the two teams. The Colonels won the first two meeting in 1969 and 1970, while the Catamounts won the most recent contest 81-74 in 2011.

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
