OVC HOOPS: Schimmel sisters lead No. 7 Cards past Lady Colonels

RICHMOND — Senior Jade Barber, a Louisville native, had her third double-double of the season Wednesday in her hometown, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Colonels fell 76-42 to the No. 7 ranked Lady Cardinals at the Yum Center.

The loss was the third in a row for EKU after three straight wins to open the season.

Louisville improved to 8-0 with the win.

Sisters Jude and Shoni Schimmel scored 12 points each to lead Louisville, while Monique Reid added 11 points as all 11 players scored for the Cardinals.

Barber, a graduate of Ballard High School, scored 11 points on five-of-six shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds. Barber entered the game ranked 19th in the country in rebounding averaging 11.4 per game.

Senior Jalisa Bryant scored 10 points for the Lady Colonels, while senior Alex Jones added nine points and four rebounds.

Two quick three-pointers by Bryant gave EKU a 6-0 lead and the Lady Colonels held Louisville scoreless for the first 3:47.

Bria Smith hit the first of two free throws to get the Cardinals on the scoreboard, starting a 19-0 run before Bryant’s third three-pointer of the half pulled the Lady Colonels to 19-9 with 8:36 remaining in the opening half.

The Lady Colonels made just two free throws the rest of the half, and a 14-0 run gave the Cardinals a 39-11 lead at the break.

The Lady Colonels shot much better in the second half, 40 percent, 12-of-30, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the large deficit.

The win gave Louisville its fifth-consecutive win over EKU.

The Lady Colonels are set to return to action Friday against Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in the Comfort Suites Invitational in McBrayer Arena.
