GIRLS SOCCER: Lady Pirates top Marion, Model falls

RICHMOND — Berea Community got big contributions from its top three offensive threats Monday during a season-opening win at home over Marion County.

Taylor Powell had four goals, while Sydney Sandefur had two goals and three assists and Tonya Renzenbrink had a goal and four assists in a 7-4 victory.

“Those three are going to have to carry us until our defense comes together,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said.

Marion County took the lead 10 minutes into the game, but the Lady Pirates tied the game 36 second later. By halftime, Berea had a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Pirates pushed that advantage to 6-1 before Marion County mounted a late charge.

Sandefur’s second goal tied her with Anna Patrick (1999-2003) for the school all-time scoring mark. Sandefur now has 101 goals.

Berea (1-0) is set to return to action Thursday at home against Paris.

Corbin 8, Model 1

The Lady Patriots opened the season with an 8-1 loss to Corbin Monday in Richmond.

Model, which returns only three players from a team that won five games last season, got a goal from Haley Corn just before halftime, but gave up three more goals early in the second half.

“We played like a freshman team,” Model coach Bill Kirk said. “We made too many mistakes.”

The Lady Patriots’ roster features three seniors, one junior and 11 freshmen.

Model trailed just 3-1 at halftime.

The Lady Patriots are set to return to action Thursday at Lincoln County.
