RICHMOND —
South Laurel knocked down some shots in the opening minutes Monday against No. 2 Madison Central.
Three pointers by Matthew Slavey and Zac Baxter gave the Cardinals (9-19) an early lead (8-6).
But, then the momentum shifted rather dramatically.
“We were zone pressing and they hit the first four shots they took,” Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. “We switched to a man press so we could cover up their shooters and after that I think they hit two of their next 14 shots.”
That change of defensive strategy worked.
The Indians put together a 14-0 run in the second quarter and continued to pull way, rolling to a 86-55 win on Senior Night in Richmond. Senior Hunter Allen had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Quan Taylor had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Central (27-1).
“Us three seniors have been playing together since we were in middle school,” Central’s Kyle Congleton said. “It’s just a team thing.”
All seniors made an impact in the lopsided victory.
Congleton had seven points, three assists, two rebounds, one steal and one block off the bench.
O’Bryan played just 13 minutes, but provided the Indians with a big spark in the first half. The starting senior guard had eight points at halftime and finished with 13 points and four assists. He was also two-of-five from three-point range.
For O’Bryan, Senior Night was an emotional experience for many reasons.
“My grandmother went into the hospital (earlier this month),” he said. “So, every game since then I’ve played for her. Tonight, I just wanted to play (hard) on Senior Night for her. It meant a lot to me.”
Allen had one of his best performances of the season. The senior forward was six-of-six from the free throw line and hit four-of-five three pointers.
“It’s like coach says, ‘If they leave you open just pull (the trigger),’” Allen said. “I caught the ball and they wouldn’t step out, so I just decided to shoot.”
Led by Allen, Central hit 11-of-25 three-point attempts. Seven different Indians hit a three and 11 different players record a point.
Central held South Laurel to 36 percent shooting in the first half and to 40.8 percent shooting for the game. The Indians also forced 22 turnovers, which led to 21 points.
The Cardinals did not attempt a free throw in the first half and went into halftime trailing 35-18.
“There’s a big difference in quickness and they were having a hard time getting to the basket because we are quicker than them,” Feldhaus said.
Ken-Jah Bosley had 10 points, Dominique Hawkins had seven points, George Walker, Daniel Parke and Chris Conner had three points each. Hunter Stocker and DeMarcus George each had two points.
Central shot just 42 percent for the game, but won the battle of the boards, 44-29, and had 27 second-chance points.
Jeff Hale had a team-high 16 points for South Laurel on 6-of-11 shooting. Slavey had seven points, Zack Jones, Trevor Grubb and Baxter each had six points and Austin Radder had five points.
Central is set to wrap up the regular season Friday at Covington Catholic.
