EKU FOOTBALL: McClain likely to start against Purdue

RICHMOND — For the second straight season, Jared McClain will be the starting quarterback when the Colonels take the field in their season opener.

Senior T.J. Pryor has been battling a hamstring injury and will likely not be ready to play next Saturday at Purdue.

“Right now, Jared is the starter,” EKU offensive coordinator Dane Damron said after Wednesday’s practice. “T.J. has not been released to go all the way live so far.”

Pryor has started almost every game the past three seasons, but did not play in last year’s season opener at Kansas State after breaking a bone in his hand.

McClain saw action in six games last season as a true freshman. In the 10-7 loss to Kansas State, the Hiram, Ga. native had 119 passing yards and scored EKU’s only touchdown — a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

On the season, McClain attempted just 28 passes, with 10 completions and two interceptions.

Pryor cracked the starting lineup as a freshman and has a chance to eclipse almost every major passing record in school history.

The Louisville native has already racked up 5,371 passing yards (second all-time) and 36 passing touchdowns in his college career. He also has 14 career rushing touchdowns and almost 1,000 career rushing yards.

Pryor had an impressive spring, still McClain was still expected to push for playing time.

The senior quarterback has been going through drills with the team this week, but was noticeable slowed by the injury.

“When T.J. is healthy, we will give him reps and he will have a chance,” Damron said. “We are a program of competition.”
