H.S. VOLLEYBALL: Central comes up short

RICHMOND — The Lady Indians were able to find a way to recover from a potentially disastrous start.

Still, they couldn’t keep the momentum going.

After dropping the opening set in heartbreaking fashion, Madison Central (1-3) won a hard-fought second set before Western Hills took control.

The Lady Wolverines dominated the final two sets and picked up a 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-12, 25-10) win Thursday in Richmond.

Central jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set on  a Brooke Morrow ace and was in control most of the way. The Lady Indians used the strong serving of Riley Lane to take a 23-14 lead.

Western Hills battled back, scoring 23 of the next 25 points while fighting off five set points.

Central evened the score at 25 after a long rally, but the Lady Wolverines scored the final two points to take the set.

Central jumped on top again in the second set, once again on the serving of Morrow. The Lady Indians were up 6-1 and extended that lead to 16-6 behind the serving of Katie Stuart.

Payton Templeton had a kill and Morrow added a block as Central pushed out to a 20-14 lead.

Templeton had another kill and Lane added some solid serves as the Lady Indians pulled even.

The final two sets were dominated by Western Hills.

In the fourth set, Central lost 15 of the first 20 points and couldn’t recover, despite kills from Templeton, Hayden Cremeens and Stuart.

Central is set to return to action Tuesday at Tates Creek.
