H.S. HOOPS: Trinity tops Central

RICHMOND — A year later, the Shamrocks earned a measure of revenge.

Trinity, the defending state champs, pulled away late in the second half and went on to pick up a 75-62 win over Madison Central Friday in Louisville.

The loss snapped the Indians’ 10-game winning streak.

Last season, Central (18-4) was the only in-state team to beat Trinity (20-4) - upsetting the top-ranked Shamrocks in Mt. Sterling in January.

The rematch was battle until Central senior point guard Dominique Hawkins went to the bench in the fourth quarter with four fouls. Darryl Hicks hit back-to-back threes late in the third quarter to put Trinity up 45-39.

The Indians never recovered and the Shamrocks sealed the win at the free throw line.

Hawkins had a game-best 29 points, while senior Ken-Jah Bosley had 14 points on three-of-12 shooting. Hunter Stocker added nine points, Quan Taylor had eight points and seven rebounds and Daniel Parke had two points.

Central trailed 22-14 after the first quarter, but rallied to tie the game (30-30) at halftime.

The Indians are set to return to action Tuesday at home against Lexington Catholic.

Pineville 76, Berea 50

The Pirates couldn’t regroup from a rough first quarter Friday at home against  Pineville.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 28-7 first-quarter lead and rolled to a 76-50 victory. Nolan Sweet had 20 points to lead Berea, while Trey Terrill added 13 points.

The Pirates (6-17) have lost six straight.

Berea shot just 33 percent from the field, while Pineville shot 61 percent.

Bradley Adkins had five points for the Pirates, while Austin Warford and Andy Allen had three points each, Neil Claytor and Shyiem Alexander had two points each and Dustin Kates and Cameron Coyle had one point each.

Berea is set to return to action Monday at home against Brown.

Augusta 51, Lady Pirates 40

Berea Community (13-9) suffered its fourth-straight loss Friday, falling at Augusta, 51-40.

The Lady Pirates are set to return to action today at Oneida Baptist.
