KIAC BASKETBALL: Berea College rolls past Midway, 75-40

RICHMOND — The Lady Mountaineers avenged an early-season conference loss with a big victory Friday at the Seabury Center.

Five players reached double figures, including former Madison Central standout Erika Parks, as Berea College defeated Midway College, 75-40. The Lady Mountaineers never trailed and forced 28 turnovers.

Berea (7-14 overall, 3-5 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) has won three of its past four games.

Midway (6-15, 4-7 KIAC) won the first meeting of the season between the schools, claiming a 55-42 victory Nov. 20 at home.

This time, the Lady Mountaineers were in control from the start. They raced out to a 45-15 halftime lead and held Midway to 22 percent shooting in the first half.

Midway shot just 27 percent (13-of-48) from the field for the game and was four-of-15 from three-point range.

DeAnn Ryann had a team-best 15 points on five-of-six shooting. Makenzie Stoner had 12 points and three assists, Parks had 11 points and hit two-of-three three-point attempts, Mikola Burns had 11 points and Anna Loveless had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Shelby Romine had nine points, six rebounds and three steals and Malena Steve had seven points and four assists.

Berea had 15 assists on 27 field goals and shot 46 percent from the field. The Lady Mountaineers were just 15-of-24 from the free throw line.

Berea is set to return to action Tuesday at home against KIAC rival Alice Lloyd (13-8, 7-3 KIAC).

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
