H.S. HOOPS: Abshear helps Southern top Rockcastle, Indians roll

RICHMOND — Despite playing with an injured shoulder, senior Tyler Abshear lead Madison Southern to a victory Tuesday in Berea.

The point guard had a game-high 30 points as the Eagles defeated Rockcastle County, 73-56. Michael Rothermel added 17 points and Damien Harris and Spencer Stone each had eight points for Southern (12-8).

“I’m glad that he played,” Southern coach Shane Buttery said of Abshear. “That was a courageous effort.”

Southern led for most of the game. The Eagles were up 18-15 after the first quarter and 31-26 at halftime.

Southern out-scored the Rockets 21-14 in the third quarter to take control.

Devante Linville provided the Eagles with a spark off the bench in the first half after some starters got into foul trouble. He scored four points and had nine rebounds.

Drew Taylor and Marlin Taylor each had two points.

Southern had 16 turnovers.

The Eagles are set to return to action Friday at West Jessamine.

Madison Central 83, Tates Creek 51

The Indians had little trouble rolling past 11th Region rival Tates Creek Tuesday in Lexington.

Madison Central (16-3) got 25 points for Ken-Jah Bosley and 15 points and eight rebounds from Quan Taylor in a 83-51 win.

The win was the eighth-straight for the Indians.

Central shot 45 percent and was 11-of-26 from three-point range. The Indians also forced 18 turnovers, which led to 19 points and out-rebounded the Commodores, 42-28.

Central had an 18-8 lead in the first quarter and was up 48-26 at halftime.

Dominique Hawkins had eight points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of action, Hunter Stocker had seven points, George Walker added six points, Chris Conner and Daniel Parke had five points, Sam Jones had four points, Zach Jarvis and Coty Alexander had three points each and Demarcus George had two points.

Central is set to return to action Friday at Russell County.
