OVC HOOPS: Colonels, Racers set for key OVC battle

RICHMOND — The Colonels hit the road today for their first conference game away from McBrayer Arena where they will take on defending OVC champion Murray State.

Game time is set for 8 p.m. Murray Regional Special Events Center.

The game can be heard on WCYO 100.7 FM and on EKUSports.com and can be seen on OVCDigitalNetwork.com.

Both teams are undefeated in conference play and sport very similar records with EKU entering the contest at 12-3 overall, with conference wins over Eastern Illinois and SIUE, while the Racers are 11-3 overall with conference victories over Tennesee-Martin and Southeast Missouri State.

Murray State is ranked eighth in this week’s Mid-Major Top-25 poll, while the Colonels moved up five spots this week and are ranked 18th in the poll.

The Racers are led by senior All-American guard Isaiah Canaan who ranks ninth in the country in scoring, averaging 21.4 points per game. He is shooting 46 percent from the field and 42 percent from behind the three-point line.

Two other players are averaging in double figures for the Racers. Senior forward Ed Daniel is averaging 15.4 points per game and leads the OVC in rebounding at 11 rebounds per game, and senior guard Stacy Wilson is averaging 14 points and five rebounds per game.

If the Colonels are to break a seven-game losing streak to Murray State they will have to do a good job of keeping the Racers off the boards.

Murray State is averaging 37.4 rebounds per game and is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 2.3 rebounds per game. In their win over SEMO last week, the Racers outrebounded the Redhawks 43-29.

Murray State is averaging 75 points per game, tops in the OVC, while allowing their opponents just 66 points per game. The Racers are shooting 47 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc.

The Colonels enter the game averaging 72.1 points per game, third in the OVC, and are holding their opponents to 63.9 points per game.

The Colonels have averaged 6.3 fewer turnovers per game than their opponents this season, the best in the conference and fourth in the nation, and are averaging 2.3 fewer turnovers on the season than the Racers.

Glen Cosey continues to lead EKU in scoring at 15 points per game. He also has 50 assists and only 19 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.63, which is tops in the OVC and 42nd best in the country.

Mike DiNunno is averaging 14.2 points and 4.2 assists per game, while Orlando Williams is averaging 10 points per game in his first three games and is shooting 44 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range.

The Colonels return home to face another rival Saturday when Morehead State comes to McBrayer Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
