Local swimmers heading to state


Madison County will certainly be well-represented at this year’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Swim Meet.

Ten local swimmers are set to compete in events at the meet, which is scheduled for this weekend at the University of Louisville. In addition, eight local relay teams qualified to compete for a state title.

Seven swimmers are scheduled to compete in two individual events.

Madison Central’s Summer Spillman is set to compete in two events — the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Spillman had the sixth-fastest time in the state in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Central’s Caroline Smith had the ninth-fastest qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle and also qualified in the 200-yard free.

Central’s Rikki Babuka won the 200-yard individual medley at last week’s regional, earning her an automatic bid to the state, and also qualified in the 100-yard butterfly.

Model’s Kathryn Brown is set to compete in the 100-yard free and the 200-yard free, while teammate Christa Nnoromele qualified in the 50-yard free and the 100-yard free.

Model’s Meredith White will compete in the 50-yard free and the 100-yard back and teammate Tate LeForge qualified for the 200-yard free and the 100-yard free.

Central’s Olivia Smith qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke and will be an alternate in the 200-yard IM.

Model’s Justine Schwartz qualified in the 200-yard IM and will be an alternate in the 100-yard butterfly.

Model’s Blake Neumann is set to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke at the state meet and will be an alternate in the 200-yard IM.

Madison Central and Model both qualified teams in all three girls relay events.

Model’s girls had the sixth-best qualifying time in the 200-yard free, the 10th-best time in the 200-yard medley and the 14th-best qualifying time in the 400-yard free.

Central’s girls had the seventh-best qualifying time in the 200-yard medley relay, the eighth-best qualifying time in the 200-yard free and the 11th-best time in the 400-yard free relay.

Model’s boys qualified for the state meet in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free relay.

The meet gets under way with preliminaries rounds in most events on Friday and concludes with the finals in most events on Saturday.
