H.S. FOOTBALL: Central set for preseason test

RICHMOND — The rebuilding process at Madison Central certainly hasn’t been easy.

It’s been a slow and steady climb.

Still, as Bert Browne is set to enter his third season as the head coach at his alma mater, he’s more optimistic than ever.

“We’ve been able to install a lot more because these guys understand what I want to do offensively and defensively,” Browne said. “I’ve heard people say, ‘Why don’t you do this?’ Well, I’d like to. But, I can’t. We can’t have 900 things. Over the past couple of years, we’ve brought them along.”

The Indians will get a chance to showcase just how far along they’ve come when they take on Pulaski County at 7 p.m. today at Roy Kidd Stadium.

Admission for Central’s only preseason scrimmage will be $3.

The Indians (6-5) won a district title last season, but were eliminated in the opening round of the Class 6A Playoffs by Boone County.

With a group of talented senior starters back, including Dominique Hawkins, Ken-Jah Bosley, Hunter Stocker and Brandon Parks, the expectations are much higher this season for Central.

“We are just a year stronger,” Browne said. “When I took over the program we were really weak. I think the fans are going to see a football team that is not only pretty good, but that is very physical.”

The scrimmage is being played at Roy Kidd Stadium because of construction at Madison Central.

A $4 million overhaul of the school’s athletic facilities is nearing completion and the football field, stands and press box should be ready when the Indians take on Mercer County on Aug. 31.

“It looks great,” Browne said. “The turf is almost in. They say by tomorrow most of it will be done. They are rocking and rolling.”

Central is set to open the regular season Aug. 18 against Boone County at 8 p.m. in the second game of the Meijer Roy Kidd Bowl at EKU.
