The Madison Southern football team got closer to notching its first victory, but still came up short against Harrison County, falling 31-24 Friday in Cynthiana.
“We’re getting closer and closer each week,” Southern coach David Brumley said. “We have to get over the hump. I’m proud of these kids.”
Junior running back Rico Brown was once again the offensive star, scoring three touchdowns for the Eagles (0-4). He had 15 carries for 117 yards and three receptions for 43 yards.
“He broke off some nice runs tonight,” Brumley said of Brown. “We follow his lead. He’s a great athlete, a great football player and a great leader.”
Junior kicker Tyler Barger also added a field goal for the Eagles.
Under center for Southern in place of injured junior quarterback Chris Coccari was freshman Chris Roberts, who was starting his second-straight game. Roberts finished with 140 yards passing.
“Chris does a good job as a freshman,” Brumley said. “He goes out there and commands the huddle. He has a strong arm, is elusive in the pocket and he does a good job for us.”
While Brumley said it was great to score while on offense, there are still a few kinks to work out.
“We couldn’t get a few stops defensively in the second half when we needed them,” he said. “We’ll look at the corrections we have to make. Go out next week and keep working hard. They’ve responded. We’ll look for anything to happen this week.”
