Action-filled weekend on local courses
Last weekend, three local courses hosted four golf tournaments starting on Thursday and ending on Saturday.
Thursday, the Battlefield played host to the rain-postponed Democratic scramble and on Saturday, the Marine Corps Scramble. Friday at Arlington, the golfers teed it up in the Carter Brandenburg Memorial Scramble and on Saturday, the Madison Country Club honored another departed friend in the Jim Lawson Scramble.
It was a nostalgic weekend with a lot of hugs and bonding with old friends. That’s what it is all about. Here are the results:
Carter Brandenburg Memorial at Arlington
Eighteen four-person teams teed it up Friday in a salute to the memory of Carter Brandenburg.
At the end of a rather warm day on the links, three teams deadlocked with scores of 15-under par 57. Comparing the scores on the back nine, the declared winner was the team of Todd Christian, Tom and Stephanie Giachinni and Kent Gillespie. Second were Al Tribble, John Hamilton, Walt Park and Russ Tracy. Third place was the team of David Shrout, Chuck Vandelune, Tom Waterbury and Mark Peacock.
In the special events, the closest to the pin winners were: No. 5 — Kenny Goodhew; No. 7 — Jey Marks; No. 14 — Tom Giacchini and No. 16 — Margo Goodhew. Long drive for the women was Charlotte Tanara and for the men was Dale Moore.
I had a wonderful day watching my team of golf professional Patrick Williams, Dudley Carmen and Allen Ault hitting some great shots and Wow! How far they hit it!
It is a lot easier game when you have a sand wedge to the green on a par four instead of a five wood. I enjoyed playing with these nice people and we turned in a very respectful 59. Mahalo!
After play, everyone assembled at the Mule Barn for presentation of prizes and a delicious luncheon. It was a great day of fun in remembrance of a nice man. Head pro Patrick Williams and his staff ran things smoothly and Jim Cox had the course looking great. Hats off to you all.
Three tournaments, three holes-in-one at Battlefield
There were three holes-in-one at Battlefield in June. On June 7, Kenneth M. Cole had a hole-in-one on hole No. 15. June 20th and 21st, the Member/Member Tournament was played. The winners were: Jeff D. Mounts and son, Jeff S. They won the tourney with a terrific score of 112, highlighted by a hole-in-one by old dad on No. 15. That’s the way it’s done, son. Runner-up was the team of Howard Mayfield and Harold Eden with a score of 123.
On June 25, the postponed Democratic Party fundraiser was concluded and the winning team, with a score of 58, was the team of Robbie Robertson, Dale Stubblefield, Eric Thomas and Terry Rogers.
Last Saturday, the Marine Corps invaded the Battlefield for their annual scramble. Forty-eight players took to the field in search of victory. Hoisting the flag of victory after the skirmish was the squad of Bart Bowman, Brian Whittamore, Wid Jennings and Jack Hulett with a 58. The best shot of the tournament went to Larry Collins with a hole-in-one on No. 15. Great shot! Many thanks to head professional Clay Hamrick for providing the info.
MCC golfers tee it up for Jim Lawson
Thirty-two golfers teed it up Saturday morning in tribute to our departed pal Jimmy Lawson.
Stepping into the winners circle at the end of a beautiful morning of golf was the team of Harvey and Wendy Winters, Tommy Broaddus and Ed Miracle with a 62. Taking Second place was Jimmy’s family — Mayor Connie Lawson, Kim, Amanda and Steve Stepp with a 63. Third was the team of Ben Benedict, Chenault Ray, Katty Wylie, Jack Isom and Ron Francis with a 64.
Closest to the pin on No. 3 was Bill Johnson with a hole-in-one. Here’s the rest of the story. The hole-in-one occurred on the second nine and Bill had a little difficulty teeing the ball up after stating “I’m a little tired.” Team member Carl Noe pulled out a gold tee and teed it up for Bill who proceeded to knock it in the hole.
You da man, Bill! Ed Miracle was closest to the pin on No. 9.
Afterwards, all the golfers enjoyed a tasty chicken dinner with all the trimmings and the presentation of the prizes. The second-place winners, Mayor Connie Lawson, Kim, Amanda, and Steve Stepp donated their prize money of $140 to the Health Now Clinic, which is in their new quarters in the basement of City Hall. Tommy Broaddus donated his $50 winnings to the Madison Country Club. Thanks to you generous people.
In the exciting shootout Friday evening prior to the start of the tourney, Jimmy Lawson’s golfing family again took center stage with granddaughter Amanda Stepp and Carl Noe, who outlasted nine other mixed teams. Second place went to daughter, Kim Stepp and Bill Johnson, Third went to Lynn Lainhart and David Broaddus.
It was another fun tournament at the old fun club. I was supposed to be chairman of this event but Ron Francis, Carolyn Jones, Poochie McPeak, Aleta Blevins and Lynn Lainhart did all the work. You all are beautiful. Also thanks to Gibson Bay pro Jason Eberle for the two free green fee passes provided to our closest to the pin winners. Mahalo.
