M.S. BASKETBALL: Lady Patriots take second at BIT

BEREA — The Lady Patriots earned two hard-fought wins over Berea Community, but couldn’t hold on to an early lead in Saturday’s championship game of the Berea Invitational Tournament.

The Model Laboratory girls middle school basketball team lost just twice in the two-day tournament, falling both times to Middlesboro. The Lady Patriots had an 8-0 lead in the title game before Middlesboro stormed back for a 55-37 victory.

The event featured three local teams.

Farristown lost to Middlesboro on Friday night, then defeated Meece Saturday in the consolation bracket. Berea beat Farristown later in the day.

Berea opened the tournament with a win over Meece on Friday night. On Saturday morning, Model trailed 19-15 with just more than a minute left, but rallied to force overtime. The Patriots went on to pick up a 28-25 win.

Berea and Model met again in the consolation bracket title game and it was once again a tight battle.

Model had an early lead before Berea charged back to take a 20-15 lead at halftime. Jordan Sandefur hit a big three pointer with a minute left in the second quarter.

Mallie Cornett hit a shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 25 at the end of third quarter.

Emily Jackson, Cornett and Charity Mack all had big baskets for Model in the fourth quarter. The Lady Patriots sealed a 35-32 win with a basket by Mack in the closing seconds.

In the title game, Model had a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, but with Cornett on the bench in the second quarter, Middlesboro took a 26-20 lead into halftime.
