BEREA —
The Berea Community football team put on a defensive display in its season opener last week, holding Trimble County to negative seven yards of offense during a 38-0 thumping.
Berea’s offense was just as impressive, rushing for 264 yards and five touchdowns.
The Pirates, though, were 0-for-5 through the air.
In its opener last week, Gallatin County had a similar one-sided affair, beating Ludlow 44-22.
The Wildcats held Ludlow to 31 yards on the ground, but gave up 151 yards passing.
Still, Gallatin County rushed for 186 yards and passed for 209 yards to score the 22-point victory.
The key for the Pirates when they face Gallatin County at 6 p.m. tonight at the Grant County Gridiron Bowl is to find a way to get the offense going while shutting down the Wildcats’ potent offense.
Last year when the two teams met, Gallatin County jumped out to a 19-0 lead on the way to winning 44-12.
“We’re going to be looking at a lot of spread,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said of the Gallatin County offense.
A spread offense is a complete contrast to what Berea saw last week.
Trimble County ran out of the I-formation and most of the rushes were between the tackles.
The Wildcats did not attempt any passes in the game.
Gallatin County likes to pass.
Last week Gallatin County quarterback Austin Chapman had a big game, going 12-for-16 for 209 yards and three touchdowns.
Chapman also blocked a punt for a safety.
Chapman’s biggest target last week was Nate McCoy, who caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Brady Lawrence and Chris Cunningham also caught touchdown passes for Gallatin County.
Gallatin County was led on the ground by running back Nick Brown who rushed 10 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
The Pirates will counter with a three-back attack.
Berea’s Zach Cunningham led the way for the Pirates against Trimble County, rushing 17 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns.
Devin Hester rushed 10 times for 88 yards and a touchdown and Hunter Wilson carried the ball 16 times for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman quarterback Deondre Tate did not complete an official pass in his first start for the Pirates, but he did connect on two two-point conversions.
Berea did hurt itself with a number of penalties, including two flags that negated touchdowns.
Defense, though, saved the day.
The Pirates forced three fumbles last week, getting recoveries by Derek Blanke, Brenton Phillips and Christian Spiller.
Fumble recoveries and strong defensive play gave the Pirates the ball in Trimble County territory on almost possession.
The defense took over from there, holding Trimble County without a first down until the final three minutes of the first half.
Trimble County only crossed midfield twice, once at the end of the first half and again in the game’s final minutes.
The Raiders ran out of time on the first drive and fumbled the ball away on the final drive.
Daniel Hubbard led the Berea defense with nine tackles and one sack. Wilson and Robert Smith each had seven tackles, Cunningham had six and C.J. Isaacs recorded five.
